A sixty-year-old woman was shot during a dispute over a PlayStation 4, marking yet another instance in which video game consoles have been at the center of altercations. The PS4 dominated the eighth generation of consoles, outselling its competitors and continuing to hold value even as its successor, the PS5, has been on the market for three years. With ports of many popular games still being released as recently as 2023, the PS4 remains a desirable item for console collectors, especially given the PS5's limited backward compatibility.
In an unfortunate incident in Newark, Ohio, a quest for a PlayStation 4 turned violent. Two teenage boys got into a scuffle, which led to one of them firing his gun and hitting a sixty-year-old woman in the legs when she approached them. The events and motivations leading to the confrontation are currently under investigation. The teenager had come to speak to the other boy residing in the woman's residence on North Morris Street, and they were arguing over the PS4 console and a pair of shoes. However, no further context is available at this time. It is worth noting that Sony briefly put the PS4 back into production, which could potentially make it easier to obtain one.
The suspect involved in the PS4 incident has been apprehended for attempted murder. The victim received medical attention at Mount Carmel East hospital and later at the Wexner Medical Center, and is expected to recover fully. Additional teenagers were taken in for questioning, and two vehicles believed to have been present at the scene were located. One of the vehicles contained a rifle and one of the suspects. However, details regarding the incident are still limited at this time. Incidents of physical altercations or violence over high-demand or collectible items, such as newly released gaming consoles, are not uncommon in consumer culture. In most cases, the motives behind these incidents are relatively straightforward. It remains unclear, however, what sparked this particular altercation. The Newark police have opened an investigation and are urging anyone with information to contact them at (740) 670-7215.
