Vietnam plans to begin constructing two high-speed railway lines connecting Hanoi with China by 2030, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment. This reflects the improving relationship between the two Communist-led countries.
China is Vietnam's biggest trading partner and a crucial source of imports for its manufacturing industry. Currently, the two nations are linked by a network of highways and two outdated railway lines that require renovation on the Vietnamese side.
One high-speed line is planned to connect Vietnam's port cities of Haiphong and Quang Ninh through Hanoi to Lao Cai province, which shares a border with China's Yunnan province. Another line will run from Hanoi to Lang Son province, which borders China's Guangxi region and passes through an area with many global manufacturing facilities, some of which are owned by Chinese investors.
The ministry didn’t provide further details about the projects.

Vietnam recently announced its plans to collaborate with Chinese railway companies in order to learn and develop its own high-speed railway network. Officials from Vietnam have been sent to work with their Chinese counterparts on this initiative.
In addition, Vietnam is also in the process of planning a large-scale high-speed railway line that will connect the capital city of Hanoi with the business hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnam’s National Assembly chairman, Vuong Dinh Hue, met with executives of Chinese railway companies during his visit to Beijing. The meeting took place while he was hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The meeting followed the signing of numerous cooperation agreements between Vietnam and China, including those related to railways. These agreements were signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Hanoi in December.
Trade between Vietnam and China increased by 22% in the first quarter of this year, reaching $43.6 billion according to Vietnamese government data.
Despite the ongoing maritime dispute in the South China Sea, tensions between the two countries seem to have eased recently.
