Vernon “Doc” Mullins is a pivotal figure in the Virgin River series on Netflix, playing a significant role in Mel's life. But does he meet his end in the original books? Here's what you should be aware of.
The Virgin River series has become a major hit on Netflix due to its mix of dramatic intrigue, heartwarming romance, and exploration of real-life challenges, intertwined with surprising plot developments.
The series is adapted from Robyn Carr's novels, which have some significant differences, but still serve as a possible source of insight into future plot developments. Some fans speculate about a major revelation for the town's doctor, while others fear he may not have a future at all. Now, let's explore whether Doc meets his end in the books. Warning: spoilers for Virgin River Season 5 Part 1!
Does Vernon “Doc” Mullins die in the Virgin River books?
Yes, Doc eventually dies in the Virgin River books. The doctor, who is in his 70s, passes away in book six, Temptation Ridge, seemingly from a heart attack.
In the novel, Paul informs Cameron of the tragic news. When Cameron asks for details, Paul explains that Mel discovered him unconscious on the clinic floor and attempted CPR to revive him, but unfortunately it was unsuccessful. Paul also mentions that the newborn baby, Emma, was found lying on the floor next to him, indicating that he may have had a heart attack while holding her.
Cameron acknowledges that he had only met Doc once, but it was evident that he was an exceptional small-town doctor who truly cared for his community. Cameron expresses that Doc's passing is a significant loss for Virgin River.
As Doc is passing, Mel performs CPR and uses the defibrillator with the help of Preacher and Jack until the paramedics arrive.

Despite all her efforts, he passes away, prompting Mel to disconnect the defibrillator, place a kiss on his forehead, and murmur, "You always were a pain. How could you leave me like this?"
Do not worry about Doc’s fate in the Netflix series, as one of the key differences between the books and the show is the pace, with the show moving at a slower pace. With new showrunner Patrick Sean Smith in charge, any plot point involving Doc will likely not be revealed for a while. Currently, Doc is preoccupied with Lizzie and Denny’s big news in Season 5 Part 2.

Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I have mixed feelings about Doc's fate in the Virgin River series. On one hand, I am deeply saddened by his death in the books, as he was a beloved character who brought so much warmth and compassion to the show. His relationship with Mel was one of my favorites, and I will miss seeing their dynamic on screen.
On the other hand, I understand that the show is based on the books, and I respect the author's decision to stay true to her original story. I am also excited to see how the show will handle Doc's death and how it will affect the other characters, particularly Mel. I believe that his passing will have a profound impact on the town of Virgin River, and I am eager to see how the community comes together to support each other during this difficult time. Overall, while I am sad to see Doc go, I am also intrigued to see how his death will shape the future of the show.
