US Politician Cleared of Airport Firearm Charges in Hong Kong Court

Hong Kong court drops charges against US politician who accidentally brought a gun to the airport, deeming it an honest mistake

Charges against American politician Senator Stephen Jeff Wilson have been dropped by a Hong Kong court. Wilson had voluntarily surrendered to customs authorities after unintentionally bringing a firearm into the city's airport. The Washington State Senator appeared at the West Kowloon Magistrates Court on Monday and was subsequently acquitted of the charge of possessing arms without a license.

Instead, he received a 24-month "bind-over" where the charge was dropped and the defendant agreed to comply with a good behavior order. In addition, Wilson's firearm was confiscated. Both prosecution and defense lawyers contended that this was an exceptional circumstance, pointing to Wilson's voluntary disclosure at Hong Kong customs and his admission of unintentionally possessing a firearm during questioning.

Magistrate Don So stated that the Republican state senator, Stephen Jeffrey Wilson, who was open and clear in his record in the city, is believed to be innocent based on the limited evidence.

Considering Wilson's role as a trade delegate who frequently traveled in the region, he asserted that the state senator should possess knowledge regarding the strict nature of Chinese and Hong Kong laws. If a "bind-over" order is imposed, it entails refraining from possessing firearms and ammunition for a period of 24 months. Any subsequent violations would result in a HK$2,000 (approximately $250) fine and potential additional legal action.

Following the court's ruling, Wilson's office released a statement acknowledging that the state senator unintentionally brought an unloaded revolver on an international flight and accepted full responsibility.

"It was entirely my mistake, and I am grateful that we were able to efficiently resolve this issue. I sincerely apologize for any concern caused," Wilson expressed.

While explaining the circumstances, he provided additional information regarding the incident of discovering an unloaded firearm on his person during a flight. It is noteworthy that the airport security checks in the United States seemed to have missed this occurrence.

"Due to my haste, I hastily packed and neglected to inspect the contents of my briefcase. During the flight over the Pacific, I instinctively reached into my briefcase for gum, but instead, I felt the presence of my firearm. A feeling of despair washed over me, and I immediately comprehended the gravity of the situation. It became apparent that I had no choice but to promptly report to the appropriate authorities, fully cooperate with their demands, and abide by the legal regulations of the country where my aircraft was scheduled to land," he expressed.

The statement mentioned that Wilson's passport was given back to him, and he plans to continue traveling in Southeast Asia with his wife. He also expressed his appreciation for the professional conduct of the authorities in Hong Kong.

On October 21, Wilson and his wife arrived in the Chinese territory after taking a connecting flight from Portland to San Francisco. Less than half an hour later, upon landing at the Hong Kong International Airport, Wilson voluntarily approached the customs channel and disclosed the presence of a firearm in his bag. Due to his inability to present a valid license to possess firearms in Hong Kong, Wilson was subsequently apprehended by authorities.

According to a statement released by his office on October 23, the senator referred to the incident as an "unintentional error" and expressed his intention to continue with his plans once the matter is resolved. Additionally, Wilson highlighted that his firearm is registered in Washington state and he possesses a concealed carry permit.

"Observing this incident, there are valuable lessons to be gleaned," remarked Wilson on Monday. "Primarily, it is crucial to diligently inspect your carry-on luggage prior to traversing airport security. However, most significantly, when faced with an error of this nature, it is imperative to exhibit respect and assume accountability."
