Throughout her career, Wendy Williams has garnered attention not only for her unfiltered opinions and confrontations with high-profile guests, but also for her resilience in the face of various health and personal challenges. From her days as "New York's Shock Jockette" on radio, where she openly battled addiction to cocaine, to her more recent struggles with Graves' disease, hyperthyroidism, and other physical ailments, Williams has proven herself to be a fighter.
Williams' marriage has been a frequent topic of discussion, particularly regarding her former husband, Kevin Hunter, and his alleged infidelity. Despite enduring these allegations for years, Williams made the decision to end their 21-year marriage after Hunter fathered a child with another woman in March 2019. The divorce was officially finalized in January 2020.
In the subsequent year, Williams provided insight into her current relationship with Hunter, sharing with Extra that he occasionally reaches out to her. She explained that she does not block his number as he is the father of their son, Kevin Jr.
In January 2021, Williams' Lifetime biopic, Wendy Williams: The Movie, delved into the highs and lows of their relationship. Accompanying the film was a documentary called Wendy Williams: What a Mess. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times about these projects, the Masked Singer alum referred to them as her "breakup project." She clarified, "At 56 years old, my breakup project isn't about destroying my ex-husband. I have no regrets about meeting him. We fell in love almost instantly and have been through a lot together... I don't regret marrying him, and I don't regret divorcing him."
The New Jersey native stated that she had surpassed the relationship, despite the scandals that were reported. She described it as her personal growth that she has accepted rather than resisting it.
Williams desired for both movies to openly portray her past, including the most challenging aspects. The audience was made aware that she is a survivor of sexual assault and gained a deeper understanding of her battles with substance abuse. The Dancing With the Stars alum also shared the experience of receiving countless supportive messages regarding her past miscarriages before giving birth to her son in 2000.
"You'd be amazed by the number of women who confided in me, expressing, 'Oh my goodness, Wendy, the same thing happened to me,'" she shared with the newspaper. "I would often be approached by strangers on the streets... It became incredibly comforting for me to realize that my own experience of loss could offer solace to others, preventing them from feeling ashamed, unattractive, or inferior as women."

Wendy Williams’ Health and Personal Struggles Through the Years
How she doin’? Through the years, Wendy Williams has made headlines for much more than just her brutally honest opinions and on-air spats with her A-list interviewees.
The talk show host, formerly known as "New York's Shock Jockette," has faced numerous health and personal challenges throughout her life. She struggled with cocaine addiction for ten years at the beginning of her career and has recently battled Graves' disease, hyperthyroidism, and other physical ailments.
In addition to her health struggles, Williams' marriage has been a topic of intense discussion. There have been long-standing allegations that her ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, led a double life and was unfaithful to her. The final straw came when Hunter welcomed a child with another woman in March 2019, leading Williams to end their 21-year marriage. The divorce was officially finalized in January 2020.
Williams discussed her relationship with Hunter in the subsequent year, revealing to Extra that he occasionally reaches out to her. Despite their differences, she mentioned that she doesn't block his number because he is the father of their son, Kevin Jr. The tumultuous nature of their relationship was portrayed in Williams' biopic, Wendy Williams: The Movie, which premiered in January 2021. Additionally, a documentary called Wendy Williams: What a Mess was released alongside the movie. When discussing these projects with the Los Angeles Times, the former Masked Singer contestant referred to them as a "breakup project."
She clarified in January 2021, stating, "At the age of 56, the purpose of my separation was not to dismantle my ex-husband. I don't feel any remorse for crossing paths with him. Our connection was instantaneous, and we have experienced numerous trials together... Marrying him was a decision I don't regret, just as I don't regret divorcing him."
Despite the alleged controversies surrounding their relationship, the New Jersey native firmly affirmed that she had "outgrown" it. "That's how I would best describe it," she explained. "I have embraced my personal growth rather than resisting it."
Williams wanted both movies to fully explore her past, even the more difficult aspects. The audience gained insight into her experience as a survivor of sexual assault and a closer understanding of her battles with substance abuse. The former Dancing With the Stars contestant also shared her experience of receiving countless supportive messages following her miscarriages, which occurred prior to the birth of her son in 2000.
She expressed, "I was surprised by the number of women who opened up and shared their similar experiences with me. I would be stopped on the streets... It was comforting for me to know that my loss could help others feel less embarrassed, less insecure, and not inferior as women."

Season 13 Delay
In September 2021, the 13th season of her show faced two delayed start dates. The Wendy Williams Show had to postpone its premiere from September 19, 2021, to October 4, 2021, due to the host testing positive for COVID-19. This decision was made to ensure Wendy's well-being as she needed to quarantine and recover fully. These changes were prompted by ongoing health issues, which also prevented Williams from participating in the season's promotional activities.
At the conclusion of the month, it was announced on Instagram by the show that the premiere date would once again be postponed to October 18, 2021. The reason provided was that Williams is still receiving medical attention and is not yet prepared to resume her work. The statement further explained that her previous case of coronavirus is no longer a concern, but she is still grappling with unspecified ongoing health issues.

Addressing the Rumors
A week after announcing her decision to take a break from her talk show, Williams reassured her fans that she was making progress in her recovery. In a statement released by her counsel, LaShawn Thomas, Williams vehemently denied any claims regarding her mental health and well-being. "I want everyone to know that I am doing well," she said in February 2022. "I am mentally sound and in good spirits. I am truly grateful for the overwhelming love and support from my fans, and I am eagerly looking forward to returning soon."
The article's statement also addresses the reports regarding Wells Fargo's declaration of Williams as an "incapacitated person." It denies the bank's refusal to allow her son, who possesses Power of Attorney, to oversee her financial matters. Thomas, Williams' representative, asserts that she had conversations with multiple bank managers to demonstrate her mental soundness. Furthermore, he claims that the bank only raised concerns about her well-being when she expressed her intention to switch to another bank.
Moreover, the statement dismisses all recent rumors about Williams' health, attributing them to the allegations of a former employee who is disgruntled due to losing direct and unrestricted access to her financial affairs. Her counsel reveals that Williams once regarded this individual as a "friend."

"As Wendy continues on her journey towards recovery, and since she is currently unable to host the show, we believe it is in the best interest of our fans, stations, and advertising partners to initiate this transition now. Hunter Takes Action
After Debmar-Mercury made the announcement in February 2022 that The Wendy Williams Show would not be returning, Hunter took legal action against the show's producer-distributor, claiming wrongful termination. As an executive producer on his ex-wife's talk show, Hunter was fired shortly after Williams filed for divorce in April 2019. In his lawsuit, Hunter alleged that his dismissal was solely based on his personal relationship with Williams. He stated that he played a crucial role in the show's success by negotiating, producing, and planning most of the concepts and branding before being let go. Additionally, Hunter argued that the decision had caused significant damage to his reputation, profession, and finances. He is now seeking a minimum of $7 million in damages, along with interest and attorney's fees.
