Captain Batel's starship, the USS Cayuga, falls victim to the destructive might of the Gorn, leading to a reptilian invasion of the tranquil colony world, Parnassus Beta. As the situation worsens, Pike's landing party finds themselves ensnared on the planet's surface. In a daring move, Lt. Spock bravely embarks on a perilous mission to propel the derelict saucer section of the Cayuga down to Parnassus Beta. His objective is to eradicate a Gorn interference field that obstructs essential communication and transporter signals. However, amidst the wreckage of the Cayuga's bridge, Spock unexpectedly encounters a fully grown and menacing Gorn. With the assistance of Nurse Christine Chapel, the courageous Vulcan confronts the colossal lizard head-on.
The encounter between Spock and Chapel and the Gorn in Strange New Worlds took place in 2260, seven years prior to Kirk's battle with the Gorn in Star Trek: The Original Series' episode "Arena" in 2267. However, their interaction with the Gorn differed greatly. Spock was taken aback when he discovered a hidden Gorn in the wreckage of the Cayuga, just as he hadn't expected Nurse Chapel to be alive to assist him. Engaged in a zero-gravity struggle, both Spock and the Gorn were clad in space suits. If not for Chapel's intervention, Spock would have perished, but she managed to shoot the Gorn, enabling Spock to shatter its face shield. Why Spock Didn’t Help Kirk Against The Gorn In TOS

On this planet, Kirk was compelled to confront a Gorn Captain in a battle of intellect, where the first one to fashion a makeshift cannon using the planet's minerals would emerge victorious. Despite being physically inferior to his opponent, Kirk ingeniously constructed a weapon and incapacitated the Gorn. Remarkably, Kirk made the compassionate choice of sparing the Gorn's life, which greatly impressed the Metron. In this life-or-death encounter with the Gorn, Captain Kirk opted for life, thereby showcasing humanity's immense capacity to the Metron.
Despite the Gorn retcons in Strange New Worlds, it is revealed that Spock, Lt. Nyota Uhura, and Scotty had prior knowledge about the Gorn due to previous encounters with them. However, the events in Star Trek: TOS' "Arena" ensure that there are no inconsistencies in the canon. At the beginning of "Arena," neither Kirk nor Spock are aware of the identity of the aliens responsible for destroying the Starfleet base on Cestus III.
