Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episode 6.
The Great Mothers of Ahsoka have presented a series of significant enigmas within the Star Wars canon. Unveiled in episode 6, these mysterious Nightsisters welcome Morgan Elsbeth and her hired soldiers, who have journeyed from a distant galaxy to retrieve the formidable former Imperial commander, Grand Admiral Thrawn. Consequently, the revelations surrounding these Force witches and their extragalactic realm of Peridea have sparked a multitude of crucial inquiries.
In episode 6 of Ahsoka, Ahsoka Tano (played by Rosario Dawson) and her droid companion Huyang journey from the familiar Star Wars galaxy to an entirely new one with the help of star whales called purrgil. However, Elsbeth and her Dark Jedi have already arrived in Peridea, where they have captured Sabine Wren (played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo). Peridea is not only the place where Thrawn has been exiled for many years, but it is also the original homeworld of the Nightsisters, which brings up a host of mysteries regarding the history of the Force witches and the three remaining Great Mothers who are now working alongside Thrawn.
9 What IS A Great Mother?
8 Why Did Ancient Intergalactic Society Collapse?
To begin with, the title of "Great Mother" is relatively new within the Star Wars canon and the existing lore of the Nightsisters. However, it is important to note that during the Clone Wars, Mother Talzin, a prominent member of the coven residing on the dark planet of Dathomir, served as the leader of the Force witches. It is possible that Talzin aspired to become a Great Mother, as this rank likely holds significant prestige among the Nightsisters. Nevertheless, the specific role of the Great Mothers depicted in Ahsoka has yet to be fully revealed.
Ahsoka affirms that the Nightsisters originated from Peridea and migrated to Dathomir. It is also suggested that intergalactic travel was much more common in ancient times, as Peridea was just one of many newly discovered worlds in this galaxy. Huyang's confirmation of the purrgil's migration patterns being linked to multiple galaxies raises the question of why intergalactic travel ceased long ago, causing Peridea and these other galaxies to become mere tales of fable and myth.
7 How Powerful Are The Great Mothers?
Similarly, the fate of the Dathomiri kingdom remains a mystery. Baylan Skoll (portrayed by Ray Stevenson) suggests that the Force witches flourished in this ancient realm. Hence, it is plausible that both the Dathomiri and the broader intergalactic society fell into ruin for identical causes.
Given the assumption that the Great Mothers hold a higher status, it follows that they possess greater power compared to Mother Talzin, who was observed during the Clone Wars. This is significant considering Talzin's proficiency in magicks which made her a formidable rival to none other than Palpatine himself. This very quality might be the reason behind the Sith Lord's pursuit of Maul, the son of Dathormir, as his apprentice, as he recognized the tremendous power possessed by the Nightsisters.
However, Palpatine's understanding of the Nightsisters' potential threat to his rise to power led him to orchestrate their slaughter during the Clone Wars. In doing so, he allowed his second apprentice Dooku and General Grievous to eliminate the Force witches, along with their undead warriors. Understanding this history, the idea of the Great Mothers potentially surpassing the already witnessed power of the Nightsisters in the Star Wars canon becomes incredibly thrilling and a significant game-changer.
6 How Did The Nightsisters Explore Galaxies From Peridea?
In Ahsoka episode 6, it is revealed that Peridea serves as the ultimate destination for the purrgil's migrations. The planet's ring is composed entirely of their remains, indicating that it is where they go to perish. This raises a question about how the Nightsisters managed to traverse other galaxies without the assistance of the star whales, considering that traveling to Peridea seems to be an irreversible fate for these creatures. It is possible that an ancient cosmic event altered the nature of Peridea, transforming it into a realm of death for the purrgil, consequently hindering their future journeys through Peridea in the same manner.
5 Why Do The Great Mothers Say They Were Exiled?
4 What Have The Great Mothers Been Doing For Thrawn?
Furthermore, the Great Mothers, like Grand Admiral Thrawn himself, have indeed been banished. The exact reasons behind their exile in this desolate realm within a distant galaxy, despite their people's strong foothold elsewhere, remain undisclosed. While the forthcoming episodes of Ahsoka may shed light on this enigma, the shared banishment of the Great Mothers serves as an explanation for their mutual alignment with Thrawn.
In Ahsoka episode 6, it was revealed that the Great Mothers had the power to communicate with the main Star Wars galaxy on behalf of Thrawn. They guided Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth through a vision, using their magical abilities, to find the star map leading to Peridea and discover a way to locate Thrawn. However, it is evident that the Great Mothers have been assisting Thrawn and his crew on The Chimaera for several years on this ancient world.
The Night Troopers, distinguished by their red wrappings and battle-damaged armor, are believed to have been revived by the Mothers following their defeat in battle. It is speculated that the Mothers used gold to repair the helmets, filling in missing pieces and cracks. Furthermore, the conclusion of Ahsoka episode 6 suggests that the Great Mothers will continue employing their formidable abilities to support Thrawn in future episodes.
3 Are The Great Mothers Older Than The Jedi?
The Nightsisters and Peridea were once dismissed as mere fairy tales, but they may actually represent a dark side force that predates the Jedi Order itself. In fact, the Nightsisters could be even older than the Sith Lords, who themselves emerged from the early Jedi. While there is no record of anything resembling the Great Mothers in the established canon or Legends, it is highly probable that this powerful trio once ruled over the Dathomiri people. Nevertheless, the reasons for their exile remain shrouded in mystery, and it is unclear whether it was related to the downfall of intergalactic civilization.
2 What Dark Side Power Lives On Peridea?
1 How Do The Great Mothers Connect To The Zeffo?
Something has been beckoning Baylan Skoll on Peridea, an enticing and enigmatic force that even the Great Mothers are running away from, desperate to escape their exile aboard Thrawn's Star Destroyer. This intriguing occurrence leaves us eagerly anticipating the revelation of this unknown extragalactic menace that even instills fear in the remaining Nightsisters. In the temple of the Great Mothers, the walls bear the ur-Kittât writings that speak of Lord Kujet, a Zeffo sage corrupted by the dark side. Lord Kujet once ruled over Dathomir in the ancient eras of the Star Wars timeline, as depicted in the Jedi: Fallen Order video game. Interestingly, Kujet and the Zeffo, an ancient civilization, played a significant role on Peridea, just like they did on Dathomir, where Kujet's body was ultimately laid to rest. It is clear that there is still much to uncover about the history of the Great Mothers and Ahsoka's journey promises to reveal more.
