A unique dating simulation game with an anime-inspired theme has recently been released in Japan. Titled "わたしは保険に入らない!" (Unofficial English title: "I Am Not Insured!"), the game came out at the end of June and was published by One to Ten Co., a member of MS&AD Insurance Group and Mitsui Sumitomo Aioi Life Insurance Company.
What makes this game even more peculiar is that it was developed by a life insurance company. Unlike typical dating simulators, the objective of "わたしは保険に入らない!" is for players to resist purchasing life insurance despite the main character's persistent attempts to persuade them. The game features charming "insurance idols," who, reminiscent of mainstream dating sims targeting women, are attractive anime-style boys.
In I Am Not Insured!, players assume the role of a young individual who is skeptical about the need for life insurance. The objective of the game is to successfully navigate through various challenges without succumbing to the temptation of purchasing insurance. Additionally, players must correctly respond to all insurance-related questions posed during the "insurance attack" sequences. Throughout the game, the player is educated about different types of insurance and their potential benefits in an effort to persuade them to reconsider their stance.
Upon successfully completing these challenging sequences and demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of life insurance, players are rewarded with a special bonus video as they progress to the final chapter and complete the game. Adding to the appeal, the insurance idol is voiced by Tomikazu Sugita, a renowned voice actor in Japan known for his captivating and alluring voice. Sugita has lent his voice to notable characters such as Gintoki Sakata from Gintama and Gyoumei Himejima from Demon Slayer, among others.
In Japan, dating simulation games have been a hit for many years, appealing to those interested in both genders. These games typically feature anime-style images of characters and adopt a first-person perspective as players engage in dialogues, select gifts, and make choices to win the hearts of the characters. Not all outcomes are happy, as each game varies in tone. Surprisingly, these games have also gained popularity internationally, with some renowned Japanese dating simulators being translated into English (like Hakuoki) and others produced by Western studios (like HuniePop).
I Am Not Insured! is not your typical dating simulator, but it's not the first one to add a unique twist. In 2011, Hatoful Boyfriend became a sensation in Japan and beyond with its pigeon-dating concept and unexpected surprises. Similarly, the 2017 Western game Doki Doki Literature Club gained fame for its unpredictable storytelling.
While I Am Not Insured! was primarily designed to educate and encourage young people to consider life insurance, rather than being a regular dating simulator, it offers a genuinely enjoyable concept. It takes something that younger generations may struggle to comprehend or deem unimportant and presents it in a fun and accessible way. Unfortunately, the game is currently only available in Japanese, but hopefully, its popularity in Japan will pave the way for an international release in the future!
I Am Not Insured! is available for Windos, Mac OS, Android, and iPhone via LINE here (Japanese only).
