No longer "Hopeless Wanderer"! Despite keeping their relationship relatively private, Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford are an absolutely ideal couple.
In April 2012, we were able to confirm that they got married in the English countryside, only a little over a year after their budding romance started making headlines. They were initially connected in early 2011 when they were seen getting cozy at two separate concerts, but it seems that their love story actually began much earlier than that.
Although they haven't acknowledged the popular belief, it is rumored that the "Little Lion Man" singer and the actress crossed paths at a Christian church camp during their childhood and remained in contact as pen pals before reuniting later in life.
In a 2013 interview with The Telegraph, the Pride & Prejudice actress expressed her admiration for the enduring nature of handwritten love letters, stating, "To possess a love letter from someone, to physically hold it and know that you can cherish it for a lifetime... well, that is truly remarkable. It represents a lost art form."
Despite frequently appearing together in public, the British couple is known for their desire to maintain privacy in their personal lives. In an interview with Vogue in April 2015, Mulligan revealed her commitment to keeping her relationship with Marcus away from the limelight. This decision was even more important to her after the arrival of their daughter Evelyn, as they already shared a son named Wilfred, born in August 2017.
Adding to the couple's private lifestyle, Mulligan's close friend Sienna Miller mentioned in the same Vogue interview about their idyllic farmhouse located in Devon, England.
"They have chickens, a dog, roast meals, and friends enjoying homemade jams by campfires," Miller described in the April 2015 profile. "Marcus can captivate crowds at Glastonbury while Carey can receive numerous Oscar nominations, and yet they always return to their farm, sporting cozy woolly jumpers and amusing hats as they nurture piglets. It's an incredible equilibrium they have successfully achieved."
During her inaugural hosting gig on Saturday Night Live in April 2021, the An Education star playfully poked fun at their rural estate, jesting, "For the past year, I've been isolating in the English countryside alongside my husband and two young children, which feels like the opening scene of most horror movies."
Mumford & Sons' lead singer, who has appeared on the popular sketch show three times, couldn't resist attempting to surpass his wife's career achievement. In a light-hearted tone, he jokingly asked if there was a musical guest scheduled for the night, offering his services if they were in need. Take a look below to revisit the intimate love story of Mulligan and Mumford.

Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford's Relationship Timeline
"Hopeless Wanderer" no more! Though they’ve managed to keep their romance relatively under wraps, Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford couldn’t be a more perfect match.
The couple wedded in the English countryside in April 2012, more than a year after their relationship gained media attention. They were initially linked in early 2011, when they were spotted together at two separate concerts. However, it is rumored that their love story started long before that.
Although the couple has not publicly commented on these speculations, there is a legendary tale that the "Little Lion Man" singer and his partner first met as children at the same Christian church camp and stayed in touch as pen pals. They later reconnected as adults.
"To possess a heartfelt love letter, to hold it in one's hand and to have the knowledge that it can be cherished for a lifetime ... it is truly an extraordinary experience," expressed the Pride & Prejudice actress to The Telegraph in 2013, enraptured by the "forgotten artistry" of handwritten love letters.
Though frequently seen together in public, this British couple prefers to safeguard their personal lives from the limelight. "Marcus is the only aspect of my life that I can keep entirely private, and I make an effort to do so," shared Mulligan with Vogue in April 2015, just five months prior to the arrival of their daughter Evelyn. (The pair also share a son, Wilfred, who was born in August 2017.)
Mulligan's friend Sienna Miller revealed details about their peaceful life together in the English countryside. In a profile with Vogue in April 2015, Miller described their idyllic farmhouse in Devon, complete with chickens, a dog, and gatherings with friends for delicious meals and campfire jams. Despite Mulligan's success as a Glastonbury headliner and being nominated for multiple Oscars, they always find comfort in returning to their farm, clad in cozy jumpers and quirky hats, while embracing the joy of raising piglets. It's an impressive harmony they have achieved.
During her first hosting gig on Saturday Night Live in April 2021, The An Education star playfully mocked her countryside estate, jokingly stating, "For the past year, I've been quarantining in the English countryside with my husband and two young children, which feels like the setup for a horror movie."
Mumford & Sons frontman, who has previously appeared on the show three times with his band, took this opportunity to tease his wife's accomplishment. He chimed in, "By the way, do you happen to know if they've got a musical guest lined up for tonight?" before playfully offering his services, adding, "If they ever need someone, I'd be more than happy to fill in."
