Path of Exile 2 is set to challenge Diablo 4 with its extensive class options, boasting a total of twelve base classes compared to Diablo 4's five.
With the inclusion of three Ascendancy classes for every character class, Path of Exile 2 boosts diversity and replayability, providing players with a staggering 48 unique class combinations. This comprehensive selection already encompasses almost all of the archetypes found in Diablo 4, making it an enticing choice for seasoned ARPG veterans seeking a profound class-focused journey.
Diablo 4 has garnered significant attention from players due to its impressive marketing campaign and positive reviews. However, as gamers highlight the flaws of its seasonal approach, Grinding Gear Games is stealing the spotlight from Blizzard with Path of Exile 2. Path of Exile was initially released as a successor to Diablo 2 almost a decade ago, but it has evolved into much more. Now, a sequel is in the works and is set to enter beta next year. With both games being action role-playing games (ARPGs) and sharing common roots, it's no surprise that Path of Exile 2 and Diablo 4 share many similarities. However, GGG's new game has a unique advantage.
One of the main attractions of Diablo 4's gameplay was its return to the series' original roots, undoing some of the changes made in Diablo 3 and Diablo Immortal. This was evident from the inclusion of classes inspired by the franchise's classic characters. Path of Exile 2 doesn't have an entire franchise to draw from, but it has clearly learned valuable lessons from its predecessor, particularly in the design of its classes.
Path of Exile 2 Gets More Than Double Diablo 4's Classes
Path of Exile currently offers seven characters, which function as classes, with six of them having three Ascendancy classes each. The seventh character has only one Ascendancy class. However, before the introduction of Ascendancy classes, the base characters in Path of Exile did not differ significantly from each other, as their main distinction was their starting point on the shared passive tree. While this allowed for flexibility, it compromised the individual identities of the classes. The implementation of Ascendancy classes addressed this issue, but they still differ greatly from the classes in Diablo 4, as well as its predecessors.
In Diablo 4, each class has a distinct identity, with unique abilities and gameplay mechanics, enhancing the appeal of playing through all of them. Path of Exile 2 follows a similar approach, this time by restricting certain skills to specific classes, allowing each class to shine in their own way. Additionally, Path of Exile 2 not only offers three Ascendancy classes for each character class but also boasts a total of twelve base classes to choose from, compared to the five in Diablo 4.
Path of Exile 2 has a significant advantage over Diablo 4 due to its extensive class diversity and immense replay value. The inclusion of Ascendancy classes adds even more variety, allowing characters to follow three distinct paths. In total, Path of Exile 2 offers 48 classes, with 12 of them featuring unique unlockable skills. Unlike Diablo 4, which has a shared passive skill tree, Path of Exile 2 provides individualized skill trees for each class.
Although Diablo 4 is not without its merits, such as the possibility of future expansions introducing new classes, Path of Exile 2 is already demonstrating its commitment to providing a rich experience for ARPG veterans, particularly those transitioning from Diablo 4. Path of Exile 2 will encompass nearly all of Diablo 4's class archetypes, and then some.
Path of Exile 2 is in development.
