Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, the Max spinoff, showcases various original Adventure Time characters along with a few antagonists. Fionna, a human tired of mundane jobs in a world devoid of magic, finds herself in the Land of Ooo accompanied by her friend Cake the Cat. The titular characters of the spinoff, who are alternate renditions of Adventure Time's main characters Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, embarks on a journey through multiple dimensions along with Simon Petrikov, also known as Ice King.
10 Simon Petrikov/Ice King
The complex placement of Fionna and Cake's story within the Adventure Time timeline traces back to the original series. In season 3 of Adventure Time, Finn and Jake find themselves entangled in the Ice King's thinly veiled fan fiction, which revolves around Fionna and Cake. This narrative serves as the foundation for the subsequent Max miniseries. With the assistance of a mystical entity known as Prismo, Fionna and Cake become canonized characters, and their world is established as a hidden realm within the depths of Ice King's imagination (thus explaining the fan fiction element). Throughout their journey, Simon, Fionna, and Cake confront their pasts and learn to embrace their destinies, all the while encountering familiar faces along the way.
Simon Petrikov, one of the main characters from Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, continues to grapple with his haunting past as the Ice King. He feels a deep sense of isolation and like a relic from a bygone era. Simon's desperate attempt to bring back his deceased fiancée, Betty, instead results in the creation of a portal at the back of his head. This portal allows Cake to enter the vibrant Land of Ooo. Subsequently, Simon also plays a crucial role in introducing Fionna to Ooo. The trio embarks on an extraordinary cosmic journey, spanning multiple universes, in an effort to reconcile their pasts and shape their futures. Considering the significant impact of Simon's story on the broader Adventure Time canon, it is truly gratifying to witness his pivotal role in this spinoff.
9 Finn The Human
The creators of Fionna and Cake made a deliberate effort to distinguish Fionna from Finn. They achieved this by reducing Finn's screen time in order to emphasize the significance of her adventures across multiple universes. In the second episode of the Adventure Time spinoff, Simon embarks on a brief quest alongside an adult Finn, who has become more muscular and grown a lengthy beard. Later on, in another universe, viewers catch a glimpse of Farmworld Finn, a character derived from the original series. Tragically, the Distant Lands miniseries confirmed that Jake is deceased in the world of Fionna and Cake, which explains the chest tattoo that serves as an homage to the adult Finn.
8 BMO
In episode 8 of Fionna and Cake, the talking cat stumbles upon another beloved character: BMO. BMO, a living prototype video game console, resides in a desolate landscape but proves to be a reliable sidekick when called upon. While BMO assists the trio in understanding Ice King's madness, their role in the spinoff is short-lived. Nonetheless, witnessing BMO embark on adventures in the Land of Ooo once again is truly delightful.
7 Princess Bubblegum (A.K.A. Candy Queen)
6 Marceline (A.K.A. The Star)
In the sixth episode of the miniseries, Simon collaborates with the Winter King, a different rendition of Simon's Ice King alter ego who managed to break free from the curse of the Ice Crown. Working together, they endeavor to replicate the Winter King's crown, but their plans are derailed when they are unexpectedly abducted by the Candy Queen. Adding a delightful twist to the story, the deranged and villainous Candy Queen is, in fact, an alternative version of Princess Bubblegum who fell victim to the curse of the crown. As the episode reaches its conclusion, Fionna steps in and destroys the crown, ultimately saving this alternate version of Princess Bubblegum from descending into insanity. In Fionna and Cake's vampire timeline, Simon's absence leads to the demise of his protective and nurturing presence for a young Marceline. Instead, the formidable Vampire King becomes her adoptive guardian, resulting in Marcy evolving into a merciless and power-driven vampire hailed as The Star. With a relentless drive to obliterate the few remaining survivors of humanity, The Star derives perverse pleasure from ending lives, transforming her into a fundamentally more sinister iteration of Adventure Time's Marceline the Vampire Queen.
5 Betty
A human-turned-wizard, Betty was previously engaged to Simon, who later transformed into the Ice King - the infamous yet somewhat clumsy antagonist in Adventure Time. In the final installment of Adventure Time, Betty selflessly gives up her own life to safeguard Simon and becomes one with a malignant entity known as GOLB (more details about this creature will be discussed later). In the Fionna and Cake episodes, a desolate Simon endeavors to resurrect his beloved partner and shares his past experiences with Fionna. Eventually, Simon comprehends the true magnitude of Betty's ultimate sacrifice, which greatly aids in his acceptance of the present circumstances.
4 Prismo
The Wishmaster, known as Prismo, is the embodiment of an elderly man's fantasy. This celestial being takes up residence in the Time Room, which is situated at the very core of Adventure Time's multiverse. In the episode titled "Wake Up," it is revealed that Prismo is merely a projection of the dreaming old man, and his immense existence is intimately connected to the mortal's slumber. Feeling disenchanted with his role, particularly following the demise of Jake, Prismo covertly fashions a universe for Fionna and Cake and conceals it within the recesses of Ice King's mind. This act catches the attention of his adversary, Scarab the God Auditor.
3 GOLB
The primary antagonist of the Adventure Time franchise, GOLB, personifies chaos and disorder. This cosmic, malevolent entity descends upon the Land of Ooo in the show's final season and meets its defeat only when Betty merges with it. GOLBetty, as it is known in the Fionna and Cake spin-off, plays a minor role. In this iteration, The Lich, an entity representing death and havoc, now offers prayers to GOLBetty. However, the character's significance truly shines through when Simon reflects on the repeated sacrifices Betty has made for his sake, apologizing for her loss of happiness and autonomy.
2 The Lich
As per Adventure Time's canon, The Lich is described as an ancient cosmic being representing death. It consistently poses a challenge for Finn and Jake. In episode 8 of Fionna and Cake, titled "Jerry," the trio ventures to find BMO's companion, Jerry, only to discover that Jerry is, in fact, The Lich.
1 Shermy (& Beth)
If Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake returns for a second season, it could potentially focus more on the characters Beth and Shermy. These two individuals were introduced in the Adventure Time series finale and serve as spiritual counterparts to Finn and Jake. Beth and Shermy reside in a dystopian version of the Land of Ooo, set approximately 1,000 years after the events of Adventure Time. In episode 7 of Fionna and Cake, viewers catch a glimpse of their plans to defeat a character known as Gibbon. Furthermore, in episode 9, Simon's consciousness is transferred into Shermy's body by GOLB. This unique experience allows Simon to gain valuable insights by exploring a future library.
