Final Fantasy 7 has been hailed as one of the most iconic and significant video games ever released, maintaining its status for over 25 years. While fans continue to debate the best entry in the long-standing Final Fantasy series, there is little argument against Final Fantasy 7 being the franchise's most pivotal game. This is primarily attributed to the game's exclusive release on the PlayStation, which played a significant role in catapulting Sony to the top of the console market during the 5th generation. Additionally, Final Fantasy 7 successfully introduced JRPGs to a wider audience, contributing to its enduring appeal. A major factor in the game's popularity lies in its exceptional cast of characters.
Despite the recent release of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the upcoming sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which may alter the familiar status quo of the beloved characters, the essence of these characters remains largely intact. Their appearance and personalities have been closely associated with the franchise for decades, ensuring their recognition and resonance among fans. While the game features a memorable protagonist and an unforgettable party of heroes, it is the antagonist, Sephiroth, who stands as the definitive villain in the Final Fantasy franchise, rivaled only by Kefka from Final Fantasy 6. However, not all characters in Final Fantasy 7's extensive roster are equally compelling, warranting a ranking.
S Tier
Sephiroth's character in Final Fantasy 7 is a prime example of a realistic and flawed antagonist. Despite his tough and cool exterior, there is a deep inner turmoil within him. His journey of coming to terms with being a genetically-engineered god adds a fascinating layer to his character, ultimately placing him among the top-tier villains in the entire Final Fantasy series, alongside Kefka.
Aerith Gainsborough - Aerith embodies the archetype of the tragic hero, serving as the necessary sacrifice to provide Final Fantasy 7's protagonists with the impetus to pursue Sephiroth and save the world. However, beyond her pivotal role in the game's narrative, Aerith possesses a compassionate nature that sees the inherent goodness in everyone, sometimes to her own detriment. Given the significance of her character development in the original Final Fantasy 7, it will be intriguing to witness the unfolding of her destiny in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
A Tier
Barret Wallace is not your typical companion in the world of "Final Fantasy 7." Initially appearing as a gruff eco-terrorist, it is unexpected for players to form a bond with him. However, as the story progresses, Barret's true nature is revealed when he interacts with Marlene. Witnessing the deep connection he shares with her and learning about his role as her adopted father, it is hard not to develop a newfound appreciation for Barret.
Tifa Lockhart is not only Cloud's childhood friend and love interest, but also the formidable powerhouse of the team. By the time players reach the Northern Cave, it is highly likely that their core party consists of Cloud, Barret, and Tifa. The events involving Sephiroth leave Tifa intrinsically connected to Cloud and elevate her to one of the game's most significant characters.
B Tier
Vincent Valentine - Renowned as the fans' favorite Turk-turned-vampire, Vincent Valentine remains an iconic and visually stunning character in the realm of Final Fantasy 7. With his anticipated appearance in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, given the timeline from the original game, fans are eagerly awaiting his return. However, Vincent is not merely captivating due to his appearance; his limit breaks add an extra layer of uniqueness to his character. These limit breaks utilize his genetic modifications, allowing him to undergo monstrous transformations, further enhancing his formidable presence.
Red XIII - Red XIII makes his appearance in the climax of the first act of Final Fantasy 7 and quickly becomes one of the central characters due to his connection with Bugenhagen. Upon returning to his hometown with Red XIII, players discover the imminent threat looming over the planet. However, despite his significance to the storyline, Red XIII does not possess remarkable combat abilities when he joins the party.
C Tier
Cid Highwind is an integral part of the Final Fantasy series, and his appearance in Final Fantasy 7 is a mix of pros and cons. On one hand, he grants the party the Highwind airship, allowing for greater exploration and mobility. Additionally, his combat skills as a variation of the Dragoon class prove to be invaluable during battles. On the other hand, Cid's personality leaves much to be desired as he often comes across as rude and unpleasant. It's a case of both triumphs and setbacks when it comes to Cid Highwind.
Cait Sith - Apart from being a feline riding a colossal animatronic robot, Cait Sith lacks substantial qualities. This double-crossing robotic cat introduces the Blue Mage class to Final Fantasy 7, but doesn't serve much purpose as a party member until the ultimate battle. Hopefully, the upcoming parts of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake can restore the reputation of this party's feline member.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
