In the world of Pokemon, where competitive and intense trainer battles dominate, it is important to note that the regions are not solely populated by battle-hardened veterans and aspiring Gym leaders. In fact, the majority of trainers are everyday individuals that we commonly encounter in our own lives, including romantic couples. Despite romance not being a central focus in the series, couples have always played a role in Pokemon games.
While many players primarily focus on obtaining Gym badges and strengthening their team, interacting with and battling with these lovebirds can add a touch of realism and relatability to the enchanting Pokemon world. While some couples, particularly in the older games, offer straightforward battles, there are a select few throughout the games who leave a lasting impression. These couples stand out due to their unique and peculiar appearances, their significance in the game's storyline, or their challenging encounters.
8 Landon & Yuriko (Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon)
Landon and Yuriko, intriguingly, do not appear in the standard editions of Pokemon Sun and Moon. However, they were intentionally introduced by GameFreak in the Ultra versions. In the picturesque Malie Garden, players will face the formidable Vulpix pair controlled by Landon and Yuriko.
This addition seemingly aims to enhance the level of difficulty in the area, especially since their Pokemon carry significantly higher levels compared to other trainers in the vicinity. Although they have limited dialogue, their battle poses a substantial challenge. Underestimating these two can easily disrupt the gameplay of novice players.
7 Lois & Hal (Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire)
The abandoned ship on Route 108 in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire serves as a battleground for trainers, including Lois and Hal, a couple who have honed their teamwork skills in this wreckage. To gauge their deep affection for one another, players can search for them on the PokeNav in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Ultra Sapphire, where their trainer message declares "We're madly in love! Our love will endure for eternity!"
Many enthusiasts have noted that the couple likely draws inspiration from the widely acclaimed sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, which frequently incorporated Pokemon references in its early seasons, resulting in a strong fan following for both franchises.
6 Old Couple John & Jay (Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire)
John and Jay, who have been married for over 50 years according to the PokeNav, have spent the majority of their time training together to form an impressive team. Their karate gi and headbands, visible on the battle screen, indicate their dedication to becoming a formidable duo capable of testing the player's squad to its limits.
Located in the second room of Meteor Falls in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, John and Jay can be easily overlooked. However, those who have encountered them are well aware of the fierce strength of their Medicham and Hariyama pairing, making them the most skilled and challenging duo in the cave. Despite their tough appearance, their strategy message on the PokeNav simply states, "Our love lets us prevail," indicating that their strong bond is what has driven them to become so powerful.
5 Ty & Sue (Pokemon Pearl & Diamond)
Players familiar with Pokemon Pearl or Pokemon Diamond will be well acquainted with Route 209, a picturesque forested area boasting dense tree cover, charming bridges, and an abundance of determined trainers. Many unprepared trainers often find themselves hurriedly returning to the safety of the Pokemon Centre after venturing into this challenging terrain. Within this narrow route, the most formidable opposition awaits at its conclusion: the duo known as Ty and Sue.
The dynamic pairing's Machop and Meditite prove to be the most formidable adversaries in the region, effortlessly overpowering any weakened Pokemon in the opposing party. It is without question that numerous newcomers to Pokemon Pearl and Pokemon Diamond have struggled to forget the formidable presence of Ty and Sue. What further solidifies their lasting impression is their intriguing dialogue, particularly Ty's contemplative remark upon their eventual defeat: "I solely focus on Sue. Perhaps that is why we failed?" This suggests potential underlying discord between the two partners when it comes to their collaborative battling efforts.
4 Day-Care Couple (Pokemon Black & White)
In several games, the Day-Care Couple makes appearances, but they are given greater development in Pokemon Black and White. In this game, they have a daughter who assists them at the Day Care, alongside other children in the area.
Upon arriving at the Day Care on Route 3, players can initially only leave one Pokemon in the woman's care. However, after meeting her husband in Nimbasa City, players can breed Pokemon by leaving two of them there for a few days. In previous games, many players used the Day Care solely to strengthen their team, but with GameFreak's addition of more personality and character to the couple, the whole area feels more vibrant and authentic.
3 Tandemaus (Pokemon Scarlet & Violet)
Tandemaus is categorized as two Pokemon functioning as one, becoming eligible due to their unbreakable bond described in the Pokemon Scarlet Pokedex as "The pair sticks together no matter what." While they may initially seem like mere friends, upon evolving at level 25, they transform into a family of four, with the parents growing significantly larger in size.
Although previous Pokemon have depicted a family dynamic, such as Kangaskhan and its baby, Tandemaus does a much better job, as the entire family actively participates in every battle.
2 Floaroma Town Couple (Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl)
Initially, this elderly couple discovered in a flower bed in Floaroma Town appears ordinary. However, upon conversing with them, players will quickly realize that there is more to them than meets the eye. If the player already possesses save data from Pokemon Sword and Shield, the old man will gift them a Jirachi. Likewise, if they have data from Pokemon Let's Go Eevee or Let's Go Pikachu, the woman will present them with Mew.
These mythical Pokemon are exceptionally powerful and exceedingly rare in other games. Consequently, when the couple expresses their desire for the player to "take care" of them, it prompts questioning as to how they acquired such extraordinary creatures. Some speculate that the couple were once formidable rivals before arriving in the Sinnoh region. Their relentless pursuit of Pokemon to solidify their status as the ultimate couple gives them a mysterious allure, captivating and leaving a lasting impression on fans.
1 Honeymooners Yuu & Ami (Pokemon X & Y)
The Reflection Cave in Pokemon X and Y is a stunning natural formation that trainers can visit before reaching the Third Gym. Among the many trainers there, one of the most challenging and enjoyable battles is against the Honeymooners, Yuu and Ami. These adventurous lovebirds are exploring the Kalos region during their romantic getaway.
What sets this couple apart is that they even have their own theme music that plays when they approach the player. They also appear in the Pokemon Adventures X and Y chapter, where they rely on a map to navigate Santalune City. GameFreak has clearly put a lot of effort into making this lively couple feel as delightful and distinctive as possible, and they have succeeded. The Honeymooners leave a lasting impression upon their introduction.
