Falling off cliffs and encountering the "elevator boss" are the main causes of death in World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore mode.
In addition to enemies like Wendigos and Kobolds, the natural environment of Azeroth in World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore servers poses its own deadly threats, including drowning and fatal falls. Blizzard recently revealed the top 10 ways players have met their demise in the game, with gravity claiming the leading position. Since the launch of Classic Hardcore servers, over 3 million player characters have fallen victim to these perilous hazards, resulting in a reported mortality rate of one death every 1.5 seconds.
In Classic Hardcore mode of World of Warcraft, death is permanent unlike the standard servers. When players die, they turn into ghosts and can use the game's chat features. They also have the option to switch to a Classic Era server and continue playing as their character outside of Classic Hardcore mode. Shockingly, within the first day, almost 100,000 World of Warcraft character deaths were recorded. While enemies like Wendigos and Kobolds were among the top 10 killers, they weren't the sole reason for players' tragic ends.
Blizzard recently released a four-minute YouTube video revealing the top 10 ways in which World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore players have died since the server launch. The death toll currently stands at 2,961,039 and continues to rise. According to Blizzard, the leading cause of player deaths in Classic Hardcore mode is falling off cliffs or encountering the infamous "elevator boss" in places like Thunder Bluff and The Undercity. The list also includes enemies that killed players within the first week, such as Kobold Miners and Voidwalker Minions. Interestingly, six of the top 10 causes of death occurred in the Alliance starting areas of Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, and Westfall.
Despite PvP being disabled by default in Classic Hardcore mode, the inclusion of Mak'gora duels on the list is noteworthy. These duels to the death in World of Warcraft have gained popularity as a means to settle disputes between players, and also grant a buff to participants that showcases their kills for others to see. However, it is important to note that while players engage in deadly duels, the treacherous environment of Azeroth itself poses the greatest threat. The perils of drowning and fatal falls are constant hazards that players must navigate. While certain classes like shaman and warlock possess abilities to mitigate drowning, not all classes have the means to counter an untimely demise.
BlizzCon 2023 is just a stone's throw away, and the Warcraft series is expected to take center stage at the convention. The fate of Classic Hardcore players remains uncertain, leaving us eagerly awaiting what lies ahead.
Currently, World of Warcraft is accessible on PC.
