Highlights

There are over 150 combinations of dual types in Pokemon, ranging from common to rare.

Pokemon often shows a preference for classic type combinations rather than frequently venturing into rarer ones.

Certain exceptional type pairings, such as Dragon/Fairy and Fire/Water, have only been employed on rare occasions and warrant greater inclusion.

There are currently 18 different types of Pokemon, which allows for over 150 dual type combinations. These combinations can range from very common, such as Normal/Flying which is found in almost every Pokemon generation, to extremely rare types that are not even obtainable in recent games.

It is disappointing to see that Pokemon only adds new combinations to types that have already been expanded upon in the past. With so many possibilities, it would be great if Game Freak considered introducing Pokemon with rare type combinations that have only been briefly seen in previous generations when developing Generation 10 and future games.

Dragon/Fairy: The combination of Dragon and Fairy types is truly unique since Fairy was introduced in Pokemon X and Y to provide a weakness to the powerful Dragon types. By combining these two types, a Dragon Pokemon is created that is immune to Dragon-type moves. Unfortunately, Mega Altaria is the only Pokemon that has utilized this combination so far, and with the absence of Mega Evolutions since Generation 6, it is high time for Game Freak to introduce a new Dragon/Fairy Pokemon.

Fire/Water: The fusion of Fire and Water types presents countless opportunities from a conceptual standpoint, as these two elements often represent opposing forces in various forms of media. In the world of Pokemon, Fire and Water also serve as a Yin-Yang counterpoint, although only one Pokemon, the enigmatic Volcanion from Generation 6, has ever embraced this dual typing. While Fire/Water does not grant immunity to Water-type moves like Dragon/Fairy does, it still offers a distinctive aesthetic and grants access to a wide range of powerful moves, making it a compelling combination.

Fighting/Ice: In Generation 7, this long-awaited type combination finally made its debut, after being absent from the series since the beginning. Its limited utility, highlighted by six weaknesses, no immunities, and only three resistances, may have been the reason it never appeared before Sun and Moon. Consequently, any Fighting/Ice type Pokémon tends to feel quite vulnerable in the competitive Pokémon scene. Nonetheless, Crabominable showcases the uniqueness of this combination, and hopefully, we will see another Pokémon that utilizes it in the future.

The combination of Ground and Psychic types hasn't been utilized by any new Pokemon since Generation 3. During that generation, only two Pokemon, Baltoy and Claydol, made use of this unique type combination. Despite having six weaknesses, Ground/Psychic types also possess a surprising number of resistances and immunities, which help to balance out their vulnerabilities. Claydol is not widely favored in the competitive Pokemon scene, but it would be intriguing to see Game Freak introduce a new Ground/Psychic type with strong stats that could effectively leverage its various resistances, resulting in a formidable opponent.

The contrast between the only two Flying/Ice Pokemon in the series, Articuno and Delibird, is incredibly amusing. It's amusing because this unique type combination is only represented by one of the franchise's original Legendaries and a Santa penguin that has a healing ability instead of an offensive one. However, the absence of a new Flying/Ice Pokemon since Gen 2 calls for the introduction of a new Pokemon to fill this gap.
