How to get a free Class-C ship in Starfield

The Starfield Overdesigned mission takes place immediately after completing the main quest called A High Price to Pay. During this quest, Walter Stroud delivers a speech and mentions that he might need assistance in the near future. Eventually, Walter confides in you about his predicament: Stroud-Ecklund plans to construct a new ship, but his team members are unable to reach a consensus. It is up to you to intervene.

To begin, make your way to the Stroud-Ecklund Staryard. This facility is situated above Dalvik, a moon orbiting the planet Deepala, within the Narion system. Enter the boardroom and engage in a conversation with Jules, who will introduce you to the rest of the R&D team.

Budget proposal and market research

First, Jules will talk about the budget proposal. Here are the options:

“A smaller budget will help us focus on the design.”

“We can build whatever we want with a larger budget.”

We chose to have a larger budget. Then, we had to successfully pass the Persuasion check to convince Jules.

You need to convince Jules that obtaining a larger budget is essential.

Mission board tasks

Continuing with the Starfield Overdesigned quest, the next task entails completing a minimum of two assignments from the mission board. In our experience, we encountered two "destroy" tasks and two "transport" tasks, although these may vary due to procedural generation. Jules mentions the following:

If you fly one type of mission, they can build a more focused ship.

If you take on a variety of missions, the ship can handle a variety of scenarios.

We opted for completing the two "destroy" missions instead, as we believed it would result in a battle-ready ship.

We abstained from engaging in the transport missions.

Concluding the project

After fulfilling your combat missions, make your way back to Jules. She informs you that the issue of people's inability to cooperate persists, and you will be presented with two alternatives:

“The only fair thing to do is make everyone give up one compromise.”

“Let’s try teambuilding. Maybe group meditation to calm everyone so they can work with each other.”

We experimented with both techniques, producing different outcomes, as demonstrated in the subsequent two images. In the case of the "compromise" approach, the rest of the team opted to decrease or eliminate certain elements. This led to the creation of the Kepler S, which boasts the following specifications:

Crew: 3

Cargo: 3,200

Jump: 30 light years

Shield: 570

The Kepler S was extremely underwhelming.

Getting the Class-C Kepler-R

We were genuinely disappointed with the outcome, prompting us to reload our save and attempt the "teambuilding" approach instead. Our character proceeded to deliver an inspiring speech to uplift the group's spirits. Our focus was primarily on selecting the most positive responses, which usually revolved around the idea of "Together as a team, we can overcome any obstacle!"

We believe that all these factors gave us what we consider the ideal outcome for the Starfield Overdesign quest:

Budget: Pick the larger budget and pass the Persuasion check.

Optional: Talk to everyone in the group and positively reinforce their ideas.

Missions: Complete two “destroy/combat” missions.

Conclusion: Choose to use teambuilding and pick the most positive/motivational responses.

We ended up with a free Starfield Class-C ship, the Kepler R, which has the following stats:

This spacecraft is noticeably large and impressive. Some potential upgrades for the ship include shielded cargo holds for carrying contraband, additional crew capacity to reach a maximum of eight crew members, and an extra weapon system. It surpasses the capabilities of most other vessels available in the game.

To acquire this spacecraft, all you need to do is speak with a ship services technician, choose it from your list of available vessels, and designate it as your home ship. However, it's important to note that since it's a Class-C vehicle, you will need to fully develop your Piloting skill.

The Kepler-R, on the other hand, is an incredibly large and heavy spacecraft.

Can you get the free Kepler-R ship in New Game Plus?

Currently, in our New Game Plus playthrough, the free Kepler-R is not accessible. Without revealing too much detail, it is important to mention that there is a crucial decision to be made at the beginning of your New Game Plus experience. This decision will significantly impact your progression throughout the campaign.

As a result, Walter will no longer provide you with the Overdesigned quest. Additionally, there is no related dialogue from the team in the staryard. It remains uncertain whether this is a bug or intentional design.
