Kita Updike And K. Todd Freeman Talk The Horror of Dolores Roach
Screen Rant: What stands out to each of you about this series? What do you think the main draw is that’s going to differentiate it from other shows people have watched?
Kita Updike: I always emphasize to people that it's not just a horror show. It has elements of drama and comedy as well, and all three are executed exceptionally well. The actors and writers excel in their respective areas, allowing each viewer to find something they enjoy. Personally, I'm easily scared and always think "the killer is coming for me!" when watching anything scary. So if I can handle it, anyone can.
K. Todd Freeman: What sets it apart is how it seamlessly combines different genres. Some people in focus groups were concerned that there is no murder in the first episode. However, the show takes a unique approach to storytelling by focusing on character development. They invest time in building the individuals within the story, which I believe is one of its strengths.
Once you become fully invested in the story and familiar with the characters, you can't help but get swept away when things start to intensify. The suspense and eeriness gradually build up, captivating your attention. It unfolds at its own pace, resembling a film rather than a typical slasher genre. It's truly enthralling. Were you already fans of the podcast prior to your involvement with the TV series?
Kita Updike: I had the opportunity to be part of the podcast! I've dedicated five years to this project, witnessing its remarkable growth and transformation. Even avid podcast listeners can anticipate numerous surprises. In my perspective, there was a significant restructuring, maintaining certain familiar aspects while introducing plenty of changes. Therefore, if you've followed the podcast, don't assume you know everything that will unfold. You possess some knowledge, but not all.
Can you provide any hints about the significance of your characters in Dolores' life and the overarching story?
K. Todd Freeman: I defy initial impressions that people have of me. I don't necessarily imply that I'm the perpetrator, but it serves as an intriguing departure from what one might anticipate. Is that sufficiently enigmatic?
Kita Updike: I believe Dolores and I share a strong bond. She is like a second mother to me, and I am like a surrogate daughter to her.
What are three words you would each use to describe your character?
Kita Updike: Earnest.
K. Todd Freeman: Protector.
Kita Updike: Ride or die.
K. Todd Freeman: Loyal.
Kita Updike: Funny.
K. Todd Freeman: Goofy.
