Daisy's inclusion as a playable character in Super Mario Bros. Wonder was a result of the director wanting to resolve fights over Princess Peach among his daughters.
In the past, Daisy has typically been a supporting character in Mario games. However, the response from fans regarding her inclusion in Wonder has been extremely positive. Super Mario Bros. Wonder presents a diverse selection of characters for players to select from.
The director of Super Mario Bros. Wonder included Daisy as a playable character to prevent his daughters from fighting over playing as Princess Peach. Nintendo fans were thrilled when Daisy was announced as one of the playable characters in the game's first trailer in June. While Daisy has been playable in the mobile game Super Mario Run, she hasn't been featured in mainline Super Mario platformer games until Wonder. In the past, Daisy has typically been a character in Mario spin-off games, often appearing alongside Peach or Luigi. However, her inclusion in Wonder has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from fans who felt she deserved a role in the mainline games. Some may wonder why it took so long for Luigi's love interest and Peach's sister-in-arms to be playable in a mainline Super Mario Bros. game, which was addressed by the game's director, Shiro Mouri.
In an interview with the director of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, as reported by Eurogamer, it was noted that the addition of Daisy to the game has been warmly received. The director expressed his satisfaction in including the princess, and even shared a personal anecdote to explain their decision. According to him, having two daughters who previously played cooperative Super Mario games, they often argued over the chance to play as Princess Peach. By including Daisy, the director aimed to resolve these conflicts within his own household while also believing that it would bring joy to numerous Mario fans.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder features an extensive selection of characters for fans to choose from, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, the Toads, and Toadette. Each character has the same mechanics, with the only difference being the character the player represents. Additionally, Yoshi and Nabbit are designed for newcomers or those who struggle with platforming, as they are essentially invincible but still require skillful navigation through stages.
In addition to the character roster, Super Mario Wonder introduces a badge mechanic that offers a wide range of abilities to aid players in completing stages. These abilities include wall jumps, charged jumps, underwater boosts, and more surprises yet to be unveiled. The badges also allow players to emulate certain abilities of characters from previous games. For instance, players can equip a badge that enables Luigi's signature floaty jumps or the cape hat, which allows for a brief period of floating in the air like Peach. With these new abilities and diverse character options, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to be a highly ambitious addition to the franchise.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches on October 20, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
