In honor of The Black Phone's one-year anniversary, writer C. Robert Cargill recently received a chilling and remarkable gift. The film, adapted from the 2004 short story of the same name, focuses on the harrowing abduction of Finney, a thirteen-year-old boy who stumbles upon a mysterious phone that enables him to communicate with previous victims of his kidnapper. The main antagonist, known as the Grabber and portrayed by Ethan Hawke, adds an extra layer of terror by concealing his face throughout most of the movie behind various masks.
To mark the milestone of The Black Phone's premiere, Cargill took to Twitter to share the surprise gift he had received. Check out his tweet below:
Cargill revealed that he was gifted masks by Tom Savini and Jason Baker, who worked on creating them for the film, posting a photo of each version worn.
How The Black Phone Became A Hit
With its release in 2022, The Black Phone has become a standout film in the horror genre, largely credited to its gripping storyline and Ethan Hawke's unsettling performance. One noteworthy aspect of the movie is the presence of The Grabber's masks, which play a significant role throughout. Although the reason behind his choice to wear these masks remains undisclosed, it is worth mentioning that he consistently wears one when communicating with Finney inside the house. As the film draws to a close, the removal of the mask evokes a profound sense of horror in Hawke's character, hinting at a deeper significance behind the masks.
The Black Phone proved to be a blockbuster hit, raking in over $160 million at the box office and garnering praise from both critics and viewers. The Grabber, thanks in large part to his striking masks, swiftly became an iconic horror character and even made appearances at Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights in the Blumhouse attraction. Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson has since hinted at the possibility of a sequel, revealing that he has some intriguing ideas in mind.
With eager anticipation, fans have been eagerly awaiting any updates on a potential follow-up to The Black Phone, which could delve deeper into the character of the Grabber and his twisted connection to the masks. Given the positive reception of the first installment, it is highly likely that a sequel, such as The Black Phone 2, would also strike gold. It will certainly be fascinating to witness what creative vision Derrickson will bring to a new film, and whether Cargill will also join forces once again.
