The producer of Saw X has provided clarification on the timeframe in which the new horror sequel is set. This installment, which is the tenth in the ongoing Saw franchise, brings back the intelligent killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), who died in the events of Saw III in 2006. While it was not initially specified, Saw X is set before that time, allowing the also deceased Jigsaw follower Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) to appear as well.
In preparation for the official release of Saw X on September 29, Bloody Disgusting shared a quote from producer Oren Koules on Twitter, shedding light on the precise timeframe of the new movie.
The post sharing Koules’ statement reveals that Saw X occurs "weeks after" the initial 2004 Saw. Koules further described it as "basically Saw II" in our perspective.
The Saw Franchise Timeline Explained
Despite the fact that the Saw films saw their primary murderer meet his demise in the third installment, Tobin Bell has continued to portray the character of Jigsaw in every subsequent movie, with the exception of the 2021 offshoot Spiral: From the Book of Saw. This has largely been made possible by incorporating flashbacks that shed light on how the killer meticulously planned the events of the sequels before his demise. Nevertheless, the franchise is not afraid to experiment with the timeline on occasion.
The first three entries of the Saw timeline follow a chronological order. However, the twist ending in Saw IV reveals that there were simultaneous torturous events happening alongside those in Saw III, indicating that Jigsaw was alive in both movies. Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw: The Final Chapter mostly continue in chronological order, with intermittent flashbacks of killings carried out by Jigsaw's protégé, Mark Hoffman.
In 2017, the legacy sequel Jigsaw introduces another twist to the timeline. Initially, it seems that the investigation within the movie uncovers ongoing killings, forming the core narrative. However, the twist reveals that these victims were actually part of one of Jigsaw's early traps from ten years prior. While Saw X may have its own twist, the timeline has been clarified, firmly placing this legacy sequel within the main storyline of the franchise.
