The sixth season of Pretty Little Liars, which aired in 2010, finally revealed the identity of "A" and provided closure to the long-standing mystery. Unlike other teen dramas, the show received positive reviews from critics and the character development became more engaging as the series progressed. Season 6 was divided into two parts with a time jump in between, adding an element of confusion. Despite some filler episodes in previous seasons, season 6 was streamlined and introduced significant changes that would be resolved in the final season.
Aria Montgomery
After escaping the torment of Charles in the Dollhouse, Aria, along with the other former captives, struggled to cope with the emotional aftermath of their experiences. Aria, in particular, faced additional turmoil due to her belief that Andrew, a possible prime suspect in the kidnapping, could be Charles. Aria forms a friendship with Clark, bonding over their shared interest in photography and art. However, at the prom, it is revealed that Clark is actually an undercover police officer attempting to apprehend Charles. Following the resolution of the "A" mystery, Aria heads off to college and enrolls at Boston University.
Throughout the series, Aria undergoes significant changes, but her return to Rosewood after the five-year time jump is reminiscent of her previous involvement with the "A-Team". After returning to town as a successful publisher and entering a blossoming relationship with her colleague Liam, Aria finds herself at the center of suspicion for Charlotte's death due to her public comments about the potential release of the suspect. Ultimately, Aria is cleared of these accusations when the arrival of "Uber A" takes the focus off her. Consequently, she becomes intimately involved with Ezra as they collaborate on writing his book.
Emily Fields
Emily, just like her friends, was deeply affected by her traumatic experience with Charles in the Dollhouse. However, in Pretty Little Liars season 6, she found solace in her newfound friendship with Sara Harvey, another one of Charles' captives who had been missing for years. Emily took it upon herself to help Sara adjust to society, but in doing so, she neglected her own healing process, avoiding her unresolved PTSD. Eventually, it was revealed that Sara was actually working as "A's" accomplice, appearing as Red Coat and Black Widow, which once again shook Emily to her core.
Upon her return to Rosewood, Emily takes on a more prominent role as a main character. It is revealed that she had dropped out of Pepperdine University and is now in desperate need of money to pay for college. In an attempt to raise funds, Emily decides to donate her eggs for financial compensation, only to discover that they had been stolen by "Uber A" as part of a sinister plan. With suspicions rising about Sara's involvement, Emily takes it upon herself to investigate, all while caring for her ailing long-time friend, Alison.
Hanna Marin
Hanna Marin coped with the trauma of Charles' torture differently from her friends in Pretty Little Liars season 6. Instead of dealing with it through therapy or self-reflection, Hanna expressed her anger by destroying her room and ending her relationship with her long-time boyfriend Caleb. She felt the need to break free from being overly protected. Hanna joined forces with Spencer to investigate the mysterious "A" and suspected Rhys to be the culprit. After successfully capturing "A," Hanna and Caleb moved to New York together, but over time, they grew apart and separated.
Then, five years later, Hanna returned to Rosewood with her new fiancé, Jordan, but she couldn't shake her unresolved feelings for Caleb, who was now dating Spencer. As Hanna's wedding approached, she became increasingly stressed, especially with the emergence of a new "A." Despite mounting evidence pointing towards Aria as Charlotte's killer, Hanna stood by her friend and helped her maintain her innocence. Alongside this, Hanna also struggled to come to terms with her own emotions and eventually confessed her love for Caleb. Unfortunately, before their relationship could progress, Hanna was unexpectedly kidnapped by an unknown stalker.
Spencer Hastings
Spencer underwent a significant transformation starting from season 1 of Pretty Little Liars. By season 6, she had become almost unrecognizable as a character. After escaping from Charles' clutches, Spencer found herself relapsing into her previous addiction and experiencing sleeping difficulties due to her PTSD. Nevertheless, she devoted herself to the investigation of "A" alongside Hanna, and they spent the majority of their time trying to apprehend the culprit. While the other girls in their group were navigating new relationships and ending old ones, Spencer's bond with Toby remained unbreakable even after they solved the mystery.
Upon her return to Rosewood after a five-year gap, it is revealed that Spencer and Toby have ended their relationship due to conflicting future aspirations. Spencer, intent on pursuing a career in politics, decides to attend Georgetown University. She enters into a relationship with Caleb, but is disturbed to learn that Toby is dating Yvonne, the daughter of her mother's political rival. The strain intensifies when it appears that Caleb may have compromised confidential information about Spencer's mother, putting a strain on their new relationship.
Alison DiLaurentis
After escaping from Charles' grasp, Alison devises a plan to rescue her friends from the Dollhouse, only to uncover the shocking revelation that Charles is her brother. This pushes Alison to delve deeper into her family history, complicating matters in the ongoing investigation regarding "A." During prom, Alison hopes to finally meet her long-lost sister. It is eventually revealed that "A" is Charlotte DiLaurentis, also known as CeCe Drake, who kidnaps the group to expose her motives. Despite the circumstances, Alison chooses to show compassion towards Charlotte. Following graduation, Alison stays in Rosewood to care for her newfound sister.
Five years later, Alison demonstrates her best qualities as a teacher at Rosewood High and decides to invite the "A-Team" to return to town for Charlotte's testimony. However, the unexpected death of Charlotte deeply impacts Alison. Seeking solace, she becomes engaged to Elliot, Charlotte's former psychiatrist. Unfortunately, Alison's life takes another dark turn when Elliot's true intentions are revealed in the season 6 finale of Pretty Little Liars. He is discovered to be working with Mary Drake, resulting in a terrifying ordeal for Alison. As a result, she is admitted to a mental hospital in a plot to exploit her for her wealth.
Mona Vanderwaal
After escaping from Charles' torment in the Dollhouse, Mona Vanderwaal found herself facing numerous challenges. However, she managed to prove her innocence to the police who were pursuing her for faking her own death. Despite initial conflicts with her boyfriend Mike, they were able to resolve their issues and maintain their relationship. Additionally, Mona aided Alison in her exploration of her family's history and closely observed along with the rest of the "A-Team" as the true identity of "A", Charlotte, was exposed.
In the time jump, Mona became involved in politics through her work on Veronica's campaign. Acting as a double agent within Phillip's rival campaign, she found herself on precarious ground with her former allies. This tension became evident at Hanna's bridal shower, and worsened when Mona admitted to her failed attempt to murder Charlotte. Eager to regain acceptance from the "A-Team", the season 6 finale of Pretty Little Liars showcased Mona's efforts to assist Spencer in her relentless pursuit of the truth.
