The Mad Max universe is expanding with an origin story for Imperator Furiosa.

Mad Max: Fury Road fans first met Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, in 2015. A war captain under warlord Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), she ultimately teams up with Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) to take him down.

Following the success of Fury Road, a prequel story for Furiosa was announced. Although many fans hoped Theron would return, the role went to Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of the heroine. The new film is set 15 years before the events of Fury Road.

What Is ‘Furiosa’ About?

The official synopsis of the film reveals that a young Furiosa is abducted and taken captive by the formidable Biker Horde, led by the Warlord Dementus. In her quest to return to the Green Place of Many Mothers, Furiosa must navigate a fierce conflict between Warlord Dementus and his rival Immortan Joe. The film will also delve into the story behind Furiosa's lost arm and her acquisition of her iconic prosthetic.

Is Charlize Theron Returning?

Before Taylor-Joy was cast, director George Miller, who has helmed the franchise, wanted to have Theron reprise her role but ultimately decided against it.

"Initially, I believed that we could simply utilize CG de-aging for Charlize, but I don’t think we’ve reached that point yet," Miller stated in a May 2020 interview with the New York Times. "Despite the impressive efforts seen in The Irishman, I believe we're still facing the uncanny valley. Many are close to solving it, especially Japanese video-game designers, but I think we still have a long way to go."

Meanwhile, Theron expressed her disappointment at not being able to portray Furiosa in the prequel.

“It’s definitely bittersweet. I have a strong affection for that character, and I appreciate the opportunity I had in contributing to her creation,” she shared with the Hollywood Reporter in July 2020. “She will always hold a special place in my heart and memories.”
