Unveiling the One Major Way Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Suits Outshine the First Game

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 takes the web-slinging action to new heights with its impressive improvements, but fans may notice a missed opportunity in the sequel when it comes to the lack of suit mods for the alternate costumes

Highlights

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is considered a better game than its predecessors, offering more combat abilities, improved visuals, and deeper character motivations and relationships.

The sequel offers a whopping 71 alternate costumes for Spider-Man, taking inspiration from different forms of media. Players now have an abundance of customization choices like never before.

Yet, one letdown is the absence of Suit Mods, which used to be bonuses connected to suits in the previous games. Although there are valid reasons for their removal, it diminishes the game's depth and replay value.

The first installment of Marvel's Spider-Man and its semi-sequel Miles Morales are widely regarded as impressive games. Following the successful footsteps of Batman: Arkham, Insomniac's initial Spider-Man titles finally provided the beloved superhero with a gaming series to be proud of. However, several years later, Insomniac has managed to surpass its previous projects in nearly every aspect with the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

According to multiple sources, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 surpasses both the first Spider-Man game and Miles Morales in terms of quality. It offers a greater range of combat abilities, more diverse traversal mechanics, a more fully developed roster of villains and character motivations, captivating dynamics and relationships, and an even more expansive world-building experience. This sequel successfully delivers what fans desire - more of what they loved about the earlier games while making improvements where necessary. Additionally, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 boasts a larger selection of alternate Spidey costumes compared to its predecessors, although the increased quantity does not necessarily mean superior quality.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Alternate Costumes Lack Any Suit Mods

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 offers a staggering number of Spidey suits, surpassing both Spider-Man and Miles Morales combined. With a total of 71 alternate costumes, including those in the Deluxe Edition, the game draws inspiration from various Spider-Man TV shows, movies, and comics. Fans will be delighted to see the return of beloved suits from the previous games, now enhanced with the sequel's impressive visuals. Additionally, many of the suits feature multiple color variations, providing players with even more customization options.

Unfortunately, despite its impressive suit selection, there is one disappointment in Marvel's Spider-Man 2: the removal of Suit Mods. In the original 2018 Spider-Man game, Suit Mods added bonuses to each suit, such as damage reduction, increased AR scanner range, and enhanced Focus gained from web attacks. Players were able to mix and match these unique mods with any suit design.

Spider-Man's Suit Mods didn't significantly enhance the game's combat, but they were a nice addition that gave each suit a sense of reward. Even if players didn't like the design of the unlocked suit, they might find value in the accompanying Suit Mod. Having Suit Mods available throughout the Spider-Man playthrough, even if not used, added to the overall feeling of reward for completing side activities.

In Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Suit Mods are completely absent. While it's understandable that they were removed due to the effort and balance required without much payoff, their absence is disappointing. Instead of removing them entirely, it would have been great to see Insomniac improve upon Suit Mods for even greater rewards. The developer could have had fun adding unique and unconventional combat or traversal modifiers. The inclusion of Suit Mods could have increased the replayability of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which would have been beneficial considering the debate around the game's length. Every small addition would have made a difference.
