Highlights
The tradition of having multiple playable characters in the Kingdom Hearts series is likely to continue in Kingdom Hearts 4, with Sora's allies playing a role in gameplay.
It seems that Strelitzia from Kingdom Hearts Union X is potentially making a comeback, indicating the possibility of her becoming a playable character in Kingdom Hearts 4. In addition, Riku has already been confirmed to be a contender for another playable slot, while Yozora is expected to have a prominent role in the game's storyline.
The release of Kingdom Hearts 4 is still uncertain, leaving fans eager for updates. It is expected that news about the game will not be announced until at least 2024, although fans hope for a shorter development cycle compared to Kingdom Hearts 3. Kingdom Hearts 4 is said to mark a significant shift in the series, as it launches the new Lost Master Arc and expands upon the vast Worlds introduced in Kingdom Hearts 3. The outcome of this new adventure is unknown, providing the Kingdom Hearts community ample time for speculation.
Currently, the series' main protagonist, Sora, finds himself trapped in the enigmatic city of Quadratum. Sacrificing himself in Kingdom Hearts 3 to protect his friends, Sora must navigate this unfamiliar environment while his allies search for a way to bring him back home. Despite the isolated setting, the extensive cast of Kingdom Hearts will still contribute to the storyline of KH4, maintaining the series' tradition of supporting one another.
Kingdom Hearts Never Lets Sora Fight Alone

Since Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, nearly every Kingdom Hearts installment has featured multiple playable characters. The circumstances surrounding this have varied, from Riku's parallel campaign in Chain of Memories to Roxas' prologue in Kingdom Hearts 2. However, only a handful of games have deviated from this trend thus far. With Kingdom Hearts 3 going out of its way to incorporate sequences with additional player characters, and the DLC expanding on this further, it is evident that Kingdom Hearts values its companions in both gameplay and storytelling.
Given Kingdom Hearts' adaptable combat structure, which easily lends itself to other Keyblade wielders, it would be wise for Kingdom Hearts 4 to continue this trend. Although Sora finds himself in Quadratum, a distant realm within the Kingdom Hearts multiverse, familiar faces are already converging in this realm. One such individual is Strelitzia, who may potentially fulfill a mission control role. It would be exciting to witness her once again take up a Keyblade as a party member, although her limited screen time makes it difficult to predict her exact role. This leaves two other potential playable protagonists, and it will undoubtedly be intriguing to observe how KH4 handles each of them.
Riku and Yozora Are Competing For Kingdom Hearts 4's Other Playable Slot
Donald and Goofy will not be able to accompany Sora in Kingdom Hearts 4 like they usually do. However, there is good news as Sora's other best friend, Riku, has already made his way to Quadratum using the Power of Waking. Although returning won't be easy, Riku, who is known as Kingdom Hearts' iconic rival, will most likely reprise his role as Sora's playable counterpart for the time being. In the Secret Movie of Kingdom Hearts 3, Riku was seen landing in Quadratum, so it's just a matter of time before he becomes relevant again.
But Riku is not the only white-haired rival available. Yozora, who was hinted at in the base game of Kingdom Hearts 3 and revealed as the secret final boss in the ReMind DLC, seems to be present in or near Quadratum. Yozora has a unique fighting style that would be intriguing to control, and it is possible that players may have the chance to play as him instead of Riku. Dialogue from both Yozora and the Nameless Star suggests that he has already experienced a game's worth of intrigue, so a significant portion of the Lost Master Arc could be dedicated to Yozora's story. Fans will have to wait and see who takes the spotlight once Kingdom Hearts 4 resumes its marketing.
