The Doctor Who fanbase is divided on whether or not Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor was naked during his highly praised episode. Capaldi first appeared as the Twelfth Doctor in a brief cameo in the 2013 50th anniversary special, "The Day of the Doctor." He then officially debuted in the Christmas special later that year, titled "The Time of the Doctor."
Capaldi led Doctor Who for three years before passing the torch to his successor, Jodie Whittaker, in the 2017 Christmas special "Twice Upon a Time." Throughout his run, Capaldi received considerable acclaim, with one of his adventures, Series 9's "Heaven Sent," recently voted the greatest Doctor Who episode ever.
Doctor Who fans debate whether Peter Capaldi was naked in his greatest episode
Crafted by ex-showrunner Steven Moffat and helmed by franchise stalwart Rachel Talalay, "Heaven Sent" follows the Doctor's attempts to break free from a perplexing castle. The Time Lord becomes ensnared in a time loop, prompting Reddit fans to spot a comical inconsistency in its operation.
In the episode "Heaven Sent," the Doctor completed the first loop without any clothes on, as he usually dresses himself with his past self's dry clothes after jumping in the lake. One Doctor Who fan pointed out that Peter Capaldi was seen running and searching through the dirt without any clothes on during that first loop.
"Some speculate that he may have done a nude run at one point," added another person. "He must have left his clothes behind at some point," replied a third. "He was either nude or wearing something different."
However, there are some who doubt that Capaldi appeared bare (on or off-screen) during his best moment on Doctor Who. "Moffat discussed this," one skeptic wrote. "He stated that the initial few loops were quite distinct from the ones we witnessed, with the Doctor spending more time in them. Some Doctors didn't even reach Room 12."
Ncuti Gatwa’s revealing Doctor Who introduction
Only after leaving clues for himself did the Doctors settle into the same cycle. Moffat mentioned that he envisions in the initial iterations, the Doctor would wait until his clothes dried, then put on a makeshift nightgown. However, in one repetition, he was forced to abandon his clothes, leaving them for the next version of himself.
In contrast, Ncuti Gatwa's recent portrayal of the Fifteenth Doctor in the 60th anniversary special "The Giggle" includes partial nudity in a canonical way. The Fifteenth Doctor emerges from the Fourteenth Doctor's body and ends up wearing only a button-up shirt and underpants for most of the episode. Later, he puts on some trousers for the extended epilogue and heads off for the upcoming Christmas special, "The Church on Ruby Road."
