Paddington 3, also known as Paddington in Peru, is currently in the works. However, keen observers may have noticed that one name is missing from the cast list: Rachel Zegler. The reason behind her removal from the movie is explained below.
Rachel Zegler has faced some challenges recently, particularly after an interview in 2022 where she talked about her upcoming role as Snow White. While the complete video showcases her excitement and pride for being cast in such an iconic role, only a short clip circulated. In that segment, Zegler can be seen criticizing the original Disney animated classic, referring to the prince as a "stalker," and discussing a shift towards female empowerment instead of a focus on true love.
There have been discussions about the cancellation of Disney's live-action Snow White since then, and it has been criticized as a "disgrace" by the son of the original film's director. Past conflicts have resurfaced and there have been talks of boycotting Zegler's upcoming project. However, many individuals have come to the star's defense, noting that Jacob Elordi made a similar statement about his role as Elvis and received nothing but praise. This week, the release date for the highly anticipated Paddington 3 movie was announced, but Zegler is no longer part of the cast. There have been numerous comments regarding this development, so here is the true reason why Zegler will not be appearing in the third installment.
Why has Rachel Zegler been removed from Paddington 3?
The real reason why Rachel Zegler is no longer going to be in Paddington 3 is because she is part of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
As Studiocanal is not part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), it has been able to proceed with filming Paddington in Peru. Filming commenced in the UK in July.
However, while most of the cast members can continue working with the UK union Equity, the same does not apply to Zegler. Originally cast as Gina Cabot, the daughter of Antonio Banderas’ Hunter in West Side Story, she has been replaced by newcomer Carla Tous.
Contrary to popular belief, Zegler's departure from the project is not a consequence of the Snow White controversy. In reality, she is unable to participate due to her active involvement in the ongoing actors' strike.
Sally Hawkins, a British actress, has withdrawn from the project as Mrs. Brown and will be substituted by Emily Mortimer. Meanwhile, the Brown family, consisting of Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Madeleine Harris, and Samuel Joslin, will be reprising their roles. Additionally, the renowned Oscar-winner Olivia Colman has joined the cast. In a statement, director Dougal Wilson expressed his joy and gratitude for the opportunity to film Paddington in Peru with such a talented and delightful ensemble. He also expressed his delight in welcoming Emily, Olivia, Antonio, and Carla to the Paddington family.
Zegler is currently occupied preparing for the launch of the forthcoming Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Paddington 3 is scheduled for release on January 17, 2025, in North America and November 8, 2024, in the UK.
