Saber Interactive, the developer behind Evil Dead, has officially announced Wild Card Football, an arcade-style American football game that will feature former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. In recent years, EA's Madden NFL franchise has dominated the football gaming market, but Saber Interactive aims to bring a more exaggerated and arcade-inspired version of the sport in collaboration with Kaepernick. Despite not playing in the NFL since 2016, Kaepernick remains a highly recognizable figure due to his civil rights activism. His actions of sitting and kneeling during the US national anthem to protest racial injustice garnered significant attention in 2016. Despite being absent from professional football for several years, Kaepernick continues to be featured in EA's Madden NFL games, most recently in Madden NFL 22. Now, Kaepernick is joining forces with Saber Interactive to develop an original football game.

Saber Interactive officially announced Wild Card Football on June 29, in collaboration with Colin Kaepernick and the NFL Players' Association. The game will offer arcade-inspired gameplay, allowing players to unlock power-ups and utilize special abilities to influence the outcome of the football game. The partnership with the NFL Players' Association suggests that Wild Card Football will feature actual NFL players, with the trailer hinting at the inclusion of players such as Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins. The game is scheduled for a multi-platform release on October 10.

The addition of real NFL players in Wild Card Football reflects the Players' Association's recent efforts to expand beyond its longstanding partnership with EA. Earlier this year, the NFLPA joined forces with mobile game developer Mythical Games to launch NFL Rivals, an exclusive mobile game. Additionally, numerous NFL players, including Jamaal Williams from the New Orleans Saints, have expressed their love for popular video games, with Williams specifically mentioning Pokemon during a press conference.

Wild Card Football aims to make a strong entry into the football genre, potentially challenging the dominance of Madden NFL. Madden NFL 23 received mixed reviews from both fans and critics, with praise for its football gameplay but criticism for the significant bugs and glitches. EA has indicated that Madden NFL 24 is a pivotal release, as major changes may be implemented based on its performance. With the endorsement of the NFLPA, Wild Card Football hopes to compete against the Madden juggernaut. The game is set to be released on October 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
