Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon has made a significant impact on players, garnering praise from critics and audiences alike. This new installment from Bandai Namco and FromSoftware has the potential to revive a once-quiet but beloved franchise. While the game's deep customization, fast-paced combat, and immersive atmosphere have been well-received, there's a lesser-known aspect of the game that deserves recognition.
Many players are familiar with FromSoftware's popular titles like Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring. However, prior to these iconic releases, FromSoftware had an extensive collection of intriguing games, including twelve Armored Core installments. Although Armored Core 6 draws inspiration from their more recent games, it stands apart as its own unique experience. Unlike the methodical gameplay of the Dark Souls series, AC6 focuses on intense combat and extensive customization. But there's more to Armored Core 6 than meets the eye, even if players don't initially realize it.
Exploration in Armored Core 6 is Surprisingly Good
FromSoftware excels in the art of meticulously crafting intricate and unique environments, filled with countless details and hidden surprises. This exceptional talent is prominently displayed in their acclaimed Soulsborne games, and is further perfected in their recent release, Elden Ring. Even though Armored Core 6 follows a more linear structure, with a focus on structured missions, it still manages to capture the unmistakable FromSoftware magic when it comes to environmental design and exploration.
The replayability of Armored Core 6 is impressive, thanks to its ranking system and the multitude of build options available to players. However, it's not just the gameplay mechanics that contribute to its replay value. Players will find themselves drawn back to previously completed missions, eager to explore every nook and cranny. Amidst the intense combat and formidable enemies, each level is brimming with secret pathways and valuable collectibles that cannot be found elsewhere. These hidden areas and paths are often left unobvious, creating a sense of anticipation and discovery as players navigate through the game. It becomes apparent that every little corner holds the potential to unveil a hidden secret or an intriguing Easter egg.
Combat Logs serve as the main incentive for exploration in Armored Core 6. These logs function as optional mini-bosses and unlock new parts for players. While some mini-bosses are conveniently located along the main mission path, others are hidden in obscure areas of the map. Hunting down these hidden bosses not only raises the player's Hunter Rank and rewards them with new AC parts, but also grants them the opportunity to engage in battles in unique environments and uncover additional narrative content. In addition to these boss battles, players can find rare parts and weapons in various chests, as well as text logs that provide further insight into the game's lore.
It's easy for players to overlook the importance of exploration within the game. Amidst the fast-paced action and exciting gameplay, players may not prioritize thoroughly exploring each area. The linear nature of Armored Core 6 can also give the impression that there is only one correct path to follow. Although the game lacks the extensive exploration found in titles like Elden Ring, it still adheres to FromSoftware's signature approach to discovery and environmental storytelling. There are no explicit waypoints or markers directing players, making the discovery of hidden areas or valuable loot all the more satisfying and authentic. While Armored Core 6 offers many exciting features, players would benefit from taking the time to explore their surroundings, as long as they can fend off the onslaught of enemies.
Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
