Jon Batiste and his wife Suleika Jaouad stand together as an unbreakable team, no matter the challenges they face.
"I'm constantly amazed by Suleika and her strength in the face of adversity," Batiste shared in a preview for the upcoming Netflix documentary American Symphony, set to be released in November 2023.
The movie encapsulates a year in Batiste's life, chronicling his remarkable career achievements while his wife Jaoud fights leukemia. Despite initially overcoming the disease in her 20s, Jaouad suffered a relapse in 2021 and commenced chemotherapy treatments in November of the same year. This was also the day when Batiste received a total of 11 Grammy nominations.
In February 2022, Batiste and Jaouad got married, just a day before Jaouad underwent a bone marrow transplant.
"We knew we wanted to get married, I believe, from the very first week of dating," Jaouad shared in an interview on CBS Mornings in April 2022.

During an appearance on CBS Mornings, Batiste and Jaouad discussed their wedding with openness. Batiste referred to the marriage as an act of defiance against Jaouad's health struggles, encouraging others to focus on the light in the face of darkness. Jaouad revealed that Batiste had been planning to propose for over a year before she received her second cancer diagnosis.
"He said to me, ‘I just want to be very clear, I’m not proposing to you because of this diagnosis. It’s taken me a year to design your ring. So, just know this timing has nothing to do with it. But what I do want you to know is that this diagnosis doesn’t change anything. It just makes it all the clearer to me that I want to commit to this and for us to be together,'" she recalled. "But once we realized we had this tiny window before the bone marrow transplant, we decided to go for it."
