Summary
In season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, James T. Kirk, in his Prime version, forges meaningful friendships and embraces his time aboard the USS Enterprise, reaffirming his aspiration to eventually lead the Federation flagship.
Kirk demonstrates his collaborative skills and ambitious nature through his interactions with Ensign Uhura, Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh, and Number One. While temporarily fulfilling the role of first officer on the USS Farragut, it is anticipated that Kirk will rejoin the Enterprise crew in season 3 of Strange New Worlds. His return aims to assist Captain Pike in dealing with a formidable Gorn-related predicament.
The Prime version of James T. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) made his debut in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, hinting at his future command of the USS Enterprise. While Wesley previously appeared as Kirk in earlier episodes of Strange New Worlds, the Prime version of the character briefly appeared in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" before having more substantial roles in "Lost in Translation" and "Subspace Rhapsody." During these episodes, Kirk formed close relationships with certain Enterprise officers, particularly Ensign Nyota Uhura (portrayed by Celia Rose Gooding) and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (played by Christina Chong), and seemingly enjoyed his time aboard the Federation flagship.
Currently, Captain Christopher Pike (portrayed by Anson Mount) leads the USS Enterprise, and there are still several years before Kirk assumes command. However, Kirk has been rapidly advancing in rank, becoming the youngest First Officer in Starfleet after being promoted on the USS Farragut. It is evident that Kirk harbors ambitions of becoming a captain himself. In the climactic song of Strange New Worlds' musical episode, Kirk even sings about how he will owe his future captaincy to the Enterprise crew. Although Kirk greatly respects Captain Pike, he understands that the Enterprise will eventually require a new captain.
Strange New Worlds Gives Kirk Reasons To Want The Enterprise
James T. Kirk is highly motivated to assume the role of captain on the USS Enterprise for various reasons. Apart from being the Federation's flagship, Kirk has already established strong relationships with many crew members, including his somewhat complicated brother, Sam (Dan Jeannotte). In the episode "Lost in Translation," Kirk forms a close working relationship with Ensign Uhura, even after she physically confronts him. Trusting Uhura's account of her hallucinations, Kirk teams up with her to investigate the situation, and their effective teamwork solidifies Kirk's desire to have Uhura as part of his crew.
In "Subspace Rhapsody," when La'an expresses her mixed emotions for Kirk, he respectfully informs her that he is currently involved with someone else. Despite this, they continue to collaborate effectively. Kirk also collaborates with Number One (Rebecca Romijn) in a musical episode, shadowing her to gain insights into excelling as a first officer. Although Kirk's friendship with Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) has not been extensively shown, Uhura introduces them in "Lost in Translation," suggesting that a bond between them is imminent. Given Kirk's ambitious and determined nature, it is unsurprising that he seeks nothing less than commanding the prestigious USS Enterprise.
Will Kirk Return To The Enterprise In Strange New Worlds Season 3?
Strange New Worlds season 2 concluded with Captain Pike facing a critical decision that could have dire consequences. The Enterprise comes to the aid of the USS Cayuga upon receiving a distress signal, leading them into a fierce confrontation with the Gorn. In the season finale, several characters, including La'an, who has previously survived a Gorn attack, are taken hostage by the Gorn. The Enterprise finds itself in a precarious position at the end of "Hegemony" and will most likely require assistance to safely escape from the Gorn's clutches.
Following the events of "Subspace Rhapsody," it appears that James Kirk has returned to the Farragut to serve as their first officer. While it remains uncertain when Kirk will rejoin the USS Enterprise, it is probable that he will make an appearance in Strange New Worlds season 3. As Kirk is not on the Enterprise during their encounter with the Gorn, he could potentially be involved in a rescue mission sent to assist Captain Pike. If the USS Farragut remains in close proximity, it could be the first vessel to respond when and if Pike issues a distress call. Regardless of how the cliffhanger concludes, it is highly likely that James T. Kirk will revisit the Enterprise at some point during Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.
