"I may seem insane, but all I desire is to emerge victorious in every endeavor," expresses Viviane Asseyi, a forward for West Ham. She is currently seated for an exclusive conversation with We at the club's Chadwell Heath training facility, where an unmistakable sense of anticipation lingers in the atmosphere.

"As the new season commences, a blank page awaits - an opportunity to create your own legacy," she eagerly states in the subsequent sentence, brimming with excitement about the upcoming match against reigning WSL champions Chelsea, which will be broadcast live on We, on Saturday night.

The atmosphere in the small meeting room next to the common area is inviting and friendly, with Asseyi's smile lighting up the space. The room offers a view of the indoor training pitch. "I made sure to do my make-up perfectly for the cameras," she remarks, feeling slightly let down that the journalist only came equipped with a recording device.

I reassure myself that it relieves the pressure, but the French national excels under the spotlight. She embraces it. This mindset was developed during her formative years in Normandy, where she fearlessly competed with boys on the school playgrounds, unphased by being the sole girl.

From a young age, I've been fortunate enough to avoid any major obstacles. The environment I grew up in fostered a strong and vibrant culture," Asseyi revealed, delving into her early years and proudly embracing her dual heritage as a French woman of Gabonese descent. As part of the October festivities, Black History Month shines a light on trailblazing Black women, paying tribute to these extraordinary individuals who have inspired us all.

Indeed, Asseyi falls into that category with her impressive record of two World Cup appearances, one Euros appearance, and a highly successful club career in France, Germany, and now England. She is among the fortunate few who have benefitted from a supportive upbringing in her quest for a professional football career. Additionally, she is grateful to have encountered no obstacles in being true to herself.

"It's not easy to be Black, and I am aware of this. I understand that there are issues that extend beyond my personal experiences, and it is crucial that we work towards improving the world," she expressed.

"I feel myself. Everyone is different but that's okay, it makes me happy.

When I arrived in England, I was taken aback by the immense enthusiasm and commitment the league and the country have towards Black history. It was a pleasant surprise that I hadn't experienced in other leagues. The people here are incredibly engaged, and that has bolstered my confidence.

Football is both my passion and my profession. When you are fully embraced and accepted for who you are, without judgment, you are free to express yourself without restrictions. The people here desire to see you excel and become the best version of yourself, which in turn makes me feel more empowered. My hope is that this same level of support and encouragement will be replicated in other countries.

The campaign for equality, understanding, and acceptance in sport continues to be a contentious issue, but it is something that the 29-year-old fully supports. She especially appreciates the sense of belonging and support she has found in West Ham since joining the WSL in 2022, after leaving Bayern Munich. She is grateful for the inclusive environment the club provides.

"I enjoy feeling a sense of belonging in this place. The club's essence is all about uniting people," she clarifies.

Asseyi's life is marked by an intriguing hierarchy, and she freely discusses her football-related interests alongside her love for fashion and music. While football naturally takes precedence, this forward also possesses a fervent passion for fashion and music, having nurtured her skills as a budding pianist alongside her aspirations as a footballer.

I often used to be late for piano lessons due to my intense involvement in playing football. Growing up, I was highly regarded as a preferred player among the boys, and it was truly a delightful time.

In addition to football, I had a strong desire to learn how to play the guitar. However, my skills in this area were rather deficient, as demonstrated by my feeble attempts resembling the gameplay of Guitar Hero. Despite this, my exceptional talent on the football field overshadowed any potential musical inclination.

"I am passionate about football, shopping, and playing the piano," she mentioned. Dealing with multiple interests requires discipline, something that Asseyi has improved as she has grown older. Now, she plays a crucial role in West Ham's three-pronged attack. Although West Ham has not won any of their 10 WSL matches against Chelsea, Asseyi finds motivation rather than intimidation from this record.

Facing off against Jess Carter from Chelsea, Asseyi acknowledges that Chelsea is a team that showcases the finest style of football in the league. With influential players and a renowned club, they deserve respect. However, once you step onto the pitch, anything can happen.

Despite not always playing well, they possess the fortunate streak of champions which allows them to secure victories. However, it is essential to remember that even powerhouse teams have experienced setbacks; after all, they are still mortal beings.

By maintaining unwavering belief, putting faith in one's teammates, and fostering unity, remarkable accomplishments can be achieved. Although our team lacks a standout individual like Sam Kerr, we collectively embody the spirit of a formidable player.
