Lin Shaye, the key star of each Insidious film, has expressed her only concern regarding the horror franchise as it approaches its conclusion. Shaye, who portrays the psychic Elise Rainier, has played a vital role in assisting the Lambert family in the first movie and delving into her early paranormal investigations alongside her partners, Specs and Tucker, with Specs being portrayed by franchise creator Leigh Whannell. Although Shaye will return in some capacity for Insidious: The Red Door, which will conclude the Lambert family's story, she has revealed her desire for spinoffs to explore the remaining open-ended storylines. Screen Rant had an exclusive interview with Shaye to discuss Insidious: The Red Door and she shared her thoughts on the franchise.
Every Unanswered Question In The Insidious Franchise
The manner in which they concluded it has always piqued my curiosity, especially since they didn't pursue a different path with those same characters. It's perplexing how they've introduced other characters in various installments who never resurface or whose storylines never progress. So, perhaps we will all eventually find ourselves in The Further. [Laughs] It's a possibility, considering the extensive universe of characters we've built, making it an open-ended and truly captivating creation.
While the Insidious franchise has introduced several supporting characters and storylines, many of them remain unresolved. One notable unresolved aspect revolves around the ending of Insidious: Chapter 2, where Elise's spirit continues her paranormal investigations with Specs and Tucker. Their journey takes them to a family haunted by their eldest daughter's unexplained coma. During Elise's visit to the girl, she is unnerved by an unseen entity, leaving her terrified and the screen fading to black.
With the recurring creaking sound and its frequent appearances in subsequent sequels, many viewers have identified this figure as the Lipstick-Face Demon, rumored to return in Insidious: The Red Door. As little has been explored about the entity's backstory and motives, except for its desire for life, it would be intriguing to see a proper continuation of Chapter 2's cliffhanger, where Elise battles to save the young girl's soul, delving deeper into the demon's history.
Another compelling direction suggested by Shaye is to explore Elise's family, specifically her nieces introduced in The Last Key. While Melissa, portrayed by Spencer Locke, was more of a victim in the second prequel, Imogen, played by Caitlin Gerard, exhibited the same psychic abilities as Shaye's beloved protagonist, making her a potential successor to Elise if the creators choose not to revive the character.
