Obito Uchiha, introduced early in the Naruto story by Kishimoto, is a significant antagonist. Being a member of the renowned Uchiha clan, Obito possessed the abilities of the Sharingan. However, unlike his fellow clan members, Obito was not naturally gifted and had to work hard to enhance his Shinobi skills. The awakening of his Mangekyo Sharingan also came late for him.
Despite these challenges, Obito achieved remarkable success as a ninja, whether as a hero or a villain. His Mangekyo Sharingan, awakened years after his initial Sharingan abilities, was one of his most formidable strengths in combat. Undoubtedly, Obito possessed one of the most powerful Sharingan in the Naruto series.
How Obito Awakened The Mangekyo Sharingan
Obito Uchiha differed from the typical Uchiha prodigies. Similar to Naruto, he was often characterized as clumsy and sometimes foolish. Despite this, Obito shared Naruto's aspiration and aimed to become the Hokage. With unwavering determination, he pushed his limits and, fueled by his compassionate nature, he eventually awakened the power of the Sharingan. Obito achieved this breakthrough during the Third Great Ninja War in an effort to save Kakashi. From that point forward, his abilities continued to improve, but unfortunately, they were short-lived.
Tragically, Obito met his demise in the war after being crushed by a massive boulder. His right side was completely obliterated, and though his left side remained intact, there was no means of rescuing him. Prior to parting ways with his team, Obito bestowed his left Sharingan to Kakashi and was presumed dead. In reality, he survived. Saved by Madara, Obito spent considerable time with him until he obtained a body capable of resuming his previous combat prowess.
As soon as he became physically able to move, Obito hurried back to his friends, only to witness the devastating sight of Kakashi fatally piercing Rin's chest. This profoundly distressing event served as the catalyst for the activation of his Mangekyo Sharingan in both eyes. Simultaneously, the left eye, which he had bequeathed to Kakashi, transformed into the Mangekyo Sharingan, forever altering Obito's destiny.
Obito's Left Mangekyo Sharingan Ability
Obito Uchiha acquired an incredibly formidable Mangekyo Sharingan, which is not surprising considering the immense tragedy he endured. The power of his Mangekyo Sharingan, known as Kamui, is undeniably one of the most dominant abilities witnessed throughout the entire narrative. Kamui grants Obito access to an alternate dimension, enabling him to transport objects, including himself. The abilities bestowed upon his left and right eyes differ significantly. With his right eye, Obito could freely employ the condensed version of Kamui. He demonstrated this ability for the first time when he encountered the mist ninjas pursuing Kakashi and Rin shortly before the latter's demise.
Immediately noticeable is the intangibility granted to Obito's body by the power of Kamui. Every assault aimed at him effortlessly passes through his form, as he skillfully slaughters each mist ninja utilizing the awakened Wood Release abilities emerging from his reconstructed side comprised of White Zetsu cells. Contrary to appearances, Obito's body is not truly intangible. He effectively transports components of himself to the Kamui dimension with such rapidity that it seems as though objects can effortlessly penetrate him to the naked eye.
Obito exhibits exceptional mastery over this ability, rendering him virtually impervious to attacks from most individuals within the Naruto universe. Remarkably, despite participating in numerous battles, he only sustains significant injuries during his clashes with Konan and when his jutsu's secrets are unveiled in the Fourth Great Ninja War. Even with only half of his Mangekyo Sharingan powers, Obito's capabilities are formidable enough to rival most opponents in the Naruto realm.
Obito's Right Mangekyo Sharingan Ability
After the Kannabi Bridge incident, Obito's left Mangekyo Sharingan became Kakashi's possession. Although Kakashi and Obito both awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan simultaneously, Kakashi's abilities remained dormant until much later in the story, perhaps due to the psychological trauma he had endured. It is likely that Kakashi was not even aware of his awakening. However, his confrontation with Itachi changed everything and compelled him to tap into this power once again.
In Kakashi's case, his variant of the Mangekyo Sharingan called Kamui had a long-ranged effect. While Obito could utilize Kamui on himself and transport parts of his body to a different dimension, Kakashi could use it on others from a distance. Initially, Kakashi struggled with precision and control of this ability, but with time, his mastery grew exponentially. By the time of the 4th Great Ninja War, Kakashi could effortlessly transport massive objects to a different dimension within seconds, showcasing his significant improvement in control.
Furthermore, when Kamui first began utilizing this technique, it had a detrimental impact on his chakra reserves. However, as the 4th Great Ninja War approached, he displayed a remarkable improvement in mastery, resulting in significantly more stable chakra reserves while employing this technique.
Obito's Double Mangekyo Sharingan Ability
Although Obito possessed incredible individual abilities in each eye of his Mangekyo Sharingan, it is their combined power that truly makes him and Kakashi formidable fighters. The true potential of the Sharingan can only be realized when both eyes are utilized simultaneously, a principle that applies to all users of this eye technique, including Obito. Unfortunately, Obito rarely had the opportunity to fully harness the power of both his Mangekyo Sharingan before meeting his demise at the hands of Kaguya. However, before his passing, he bestowed upon Kakashi the remaining Six Paths chakra he possessed, granting him temporary access to the power of the Mangekyo Sharingan.
Kakashi possessed the extraordinary ability to simultaneously use both of his eyes, making him incredibly overpowered. This skill allowed him to virtually become invincible, as he could rival opponents as formidable as Kaguya Otsutsuki, which is truly astonishing. Additionally, his Kamui technique grew exponentially stronger. His Kamui was even capable of warping away Kaguya's rabbit beast form, and his Susanoo was equipped with weapons such as Kamui Shuriken that could warp away anything they sliced. In fact, his Susanoo was so formidable that not even Kaguya could defeat it.
Furthermore, Kakashi's incorporation of Kamui into his other techniques, like Kamui Raikiri, was exceptionally dangerous. By utilizing this power, he was able to slice through Kaguya's shoulder and phase right through her, successfully evading all of her counterattacks. Undoubtedly, when wielding both Mangekyo Sharingan, Kakashi's powers reached an unparalleled level. It provided fans with a glimpse of how potent Obito could have been if he had used both of his eyes simultaneously. Arguably, this Mangekyo Sharingan is the most formidable one witnessed in the entire series, deserving all the praise it receives.
