In season 3 of The Righteous Gemstones, the show's creator and star Danny McBride, along with the rest of the creative team, once again deliver a fantastic outing. The blend of the familiar and the fresh is perfect, with top-notch performances and comedy. The introduction of new characters and situations add a fun and fitting dimension to the world. Additionally, the costume design in the show is on point, with each character's outfit not only reflecting their personality but also emphasizing the unique reality they inhabit.
Taking over as the costume designer for season 3 is Christina Flannery, a self-proclaimed longtime fan of the show. In an interview with Screen Rant, Flannery expressed her desire to evolve the appearance of the Gemstone family while maintaining a grounded sense of reality. She approached her work with creative "research" methods that were as inventive as the show itself. Flannery had this to say about finding a fresh look for Adam Devine's character, Kelvin Gemstone, this season:
Christina Flannery: My daughter's grandparents attend a megachurch, which means she often attends as well. She would send me these videos of the preachers, and I noticed they were wearing that popular Supreme clothing and other similar trendy items. Interestingly, I have noticed a similar trend in Kelvin, through my daughter's peculiar videos where she captures short clips for me.
The Range of Real-World Inspirations Behind The Righteous Gemstones' Costumes
Kelvin may have been the sole character to benefit from sly tactics to enhance his wardrobe, but the costume team drew inspiration from real-world sources for the standout outfits in each season. Game shows, pop stars, and countless other references were explored by Flannery and her team to achieve the stylish and diverse look of The Righteous Gemstones' highly active and talented ensemble in season 3. Flannery discussed the wide array of influences in the same interview:
Christina Flannery: The Gemstones track outfit was a strange collaboration that reminded me of Dale Earnhardt meeting Elvis. I really love those costumes. I think Jake or Shaina may have designed the graphic for Smut Busters. There were a few different ones. We were inspired by the show Double Dare, so there's a subtle reference to that. It's amazing, but also a bit disgusting.
Despite being a show about preachers, the costumes in The Righteous Gemstones season 3 are truly impressive. From secret society robes to racing tracksuits and even an oyster costume (Flannery: "I want to be buried in the oyster shell"), it may seem unlikely for these elements to coexist in the same series. However, the show's talented writing and costuming teams successfully integrated them in a natural way. It will be captivating to see what direction The Righteous Gemstones takes next.
