In the thrilling season 2 premiere of Our Flag Means Death on Max, viewers can expect a combination of humor, heartbreak, and exciting adventures on the high seas. Just like the successful first season in 2022, this new installment delivers all the elements that made it a hit. In season 1, Stede Bonnet, a refined gentleman turned pirate, gave up his family's wealth and prestigious title to pursue a life of piracy. However, his journey was far from easy as he found himself developing feelings for Captain Blackbeard, also known as Ed Teach, despite knowing it was unwise. In the finale of season 1, Stede fakes his own death to be able to reunite with Ed and continue their life as pirates together.
Stede Bonnet Is Consumed With Thoughts Of Finding Ed
In contrast to Stede, Ed is struggling to cope with their sudden separation. Overwhelmed by heartbreak, he neglects his responsibilities as the captain of the Revenge, provoking outrage from his first mate and notorious Stede adversary, Izzy Hands (Con O'Neill). Accused of losing his edge, Ed asserts his dominance by tossing one of his own crewmates overboard, discarding all of Stede's possessions into the sea, and marooning the gentleman pirate's crew on an uninhabited island. Unbeknownst to Ed, Stede is determined to reunite, setting the stage for the start of Season 2 of Our Flag Means Death.
Stede, having officially renounced his wealth and successfully reunited with most of his crew, is navigating the treacherous waters of the pirate world. In the season 2 premiere of Our Flag Means Death, he takes a moment to chronicle his tumultuous adventures by means of a heartfelt message sealed inside a bottle, intended for Ed. While the journey has been filled with its fair share of challenges, Stede strives to maintain an optimistic outlook: "As a crew, we are currently in a phase of rebuilding," he candidly reveals. Yet beneath this hopeful facade lies Stede's unwavering determination fueled by his love for Ed and his relentless quest to find the elusive captain. "Allow me to reiterate, we are making excellent progress," Stede narrates, his thoughts constantly consumed by memories of their treasured connection.
A Heartbroken Ed Reverts To His Blackbeard Ways
Bonnet’s Crew Is “Rescued” From Spanish Jackie By Zheng Yi Sao
Both Stede and Ed handle their heartbreak and hardship in contrasting ways. While Stede channels his pain into productive action, Ed's response is less controlled. Driven by overwhelming emotions, he regresses into his Kraken persona and declares himself as the embodiment of darkness. In a chilling display reminiscent of Blackbeard himself, Ed's crew callously massacres a wedding party at sea for mere amusement. The senseless violence leaves even Ed's loyal crew feeling uneasy and bewildered, further exacerbating the complexity of Blackbeard and Stede's painful separation.
In the first episode of season 2 of Our Flag Means Death, titled "Impossible Birds," Stede and his crew are faced with limited options. Desperate to acquire enough funds for a proper ship, they strike a deal with Spanish Jackie (Leslie Jones), an infamous pirate bar owner known for having 19 husbands under her command at the Republic of Pirates. However, when Stede's crew attempts to steal Spanish Jackie's chest containing valuable indigo, they find themselves in a precarious situation. Fortunately, they are rescued by Zheng Yi Sao (Ruibo Qian), a local soup kiosk owner.
Zheng Yi Sao, the revered pirate queen, makes herself known to Stede and his comrades as she welcomes them aboard her ship, the Red Flag. In a previous episode, the disguised soup server emphasized her preference for action rather than ambition, a recurring theme throughout the season. Normally, the captain of the Red Flag does not permit men on her vessel, but she makes an exception for Stede's crew, who are described as "tender as hell." Initially, this gesture appears to be life-changing, but complications arise as they navigate life on the pirate queen's ship.
Ed’s Crew Calls Their Toxic Workplace Into Question
Once Izzy persuaded them to jettison a substantial amount of loot from the Revenge, solely for the purpose of acquiring more, Blackbeard's crew begins to voice their concerns about the situation on board. "We believe your relationship with Blackbeard is unhealthy," Jim (Vico Ortiz) confronts Izzy. Nevertheless, this is not the sole point of contention. With a heartbroken and enraged Blackbeard cultivating an increasingly "toxic atmosphere," the crew not only worries for Izzy but also for their own well-being. Regrettably, their apprehensions are met with unfavorable outcomes when they express them.
Ed Decides To Kill Izzy (But The Crew Secretly Saves Him)
In Our Flag Means Death season 1, Ed's transformation into a mere shadow of his former self is brought to light when Izzy confronts him for his hesitation to eliminate Stede, the once-feared captain. Ed, attempting to preserve his rugged persona and restore his tough image, ends up going too far and veering off track. The tension between Izzy and Ed persists, culminating in a dramatic workplace meeting where Ed points his gun at the crew. In this intense moment, without hesitation, Ed silences Izzy with a fatal shot, solidifying the destructive impact of his deep affection for Steve Bonnet.
Lucius Reappears & Tells Stede What Ed Did To Him
On board the Red Flag, Stede and his crew encounter a familiar face - Lucius (Nathan Foad), the only other man who had the privilege of sailing with the pirate queen. Previously the scribe of Stede and the lover of Black Pete (Matthew Maher), Lucius feels a bittersweet sense of joy upon reuniting with his former comrades. However, the unexpected turn of events in the season 1 finale of Our Flag is Death has left a lasting impact on him. A poignant moment occurred when Ed, consumed by heartbreak, cruelly tossed Lucius overboard as an act of callousness. Initially, Lucius conceals the truth, but as Stede becomes fixated on locating Ed, Lucius cautions that Blackbeard may not be the person Stede envisions him to be.
Frenchie & Nathaniel Buttons Get New Roles
Ed Discovers Izzy & Threatens To Kill The Whole Crew
After Ed shoots Izzy, he appoints Frenchie (played by Joel Fry) as his new first mate. Frenchie, reluctant to become the next target, tries to downplay his qualifications. However, the unpredictable and heartbroken Ed insists on the appointment, leaving Frenchie with no other option but to accept. In his new role, Frenchie's first task is to eliminate Izzy, but he and the crew secretly decide to conceal Izzy below deck instead. Meanwhile, on the Red Flag, Zheng Yi Sao's first mate amusingly labels Nathaniel Buttons (portrayed by Ewen Bremner) as a "sea witch." While it may just be a lighthearted reference to the pirate's ability to communicate with seagulls, it potentially hints at a future storyline in a second season.
Due to Frenchie's lack of deceitful skills, Ed concludes that his former first mate is alive and onboard the Revenge. In the lower deck, Jim performs a leg amputation on Izzy just before Ed stumbles upon them. After giving Izzy his pistol and instructing him to end his own life, Ed decides to release his pent-up frustration. He steers the Revenge directly into a violent storm and proceeds to destroy the ship's wheel. Not yet satisfied, he coerces his crew into fighting one another and threatens to launch a cannon at the mast, with the intention of annihilating everyone onboard. Indeed, breakups can be quite tumultuous.
The Crew Of The Revenge Commits Mutiny
A Love Triangle Forms Between Jim, Zheng & Oluwande
No longer willing to endure their captain's savage behavior, the crew of the Revenge decides to take matters into their own hands and mount a resistance. In a daring act, Jim forcefully brings down Ed, leaving him sprawled on the ground. Displaying pure rage, Jim mercilessly lifts a cannonball high into the air, as if intending to shatter Ed's skull. Yet, just as the tension reaches its peak, the scene abruptly shifts, leaving Ed's fate hanging in the balance.
As the battered Revenge drifts ashore next to the Red Flag, suspicions of mutiny arise among the pirate queen's first mate. Prompted by this accusation, the first mate proposes a ruthless plan to eliminate Izzy, Frenchie, Jim, and the rest of Ed's loyal crew.
Having returned to the Republic of Pirates, Zheng Yi Sao becomes infatuated with the always sensible Oluwande Boodhari (Samson Kayo), who frequently visited the soup kiosk alongside Stede. Oluwande had previously been romantically involved with Jim, who, in an unusual display of affection, joins forces with Madeleine Sami's pirate character to amputate a leg. As Oluwande and Jim reunite in episode 3 of Our Flag Means Death season 2, titled "The Innkeeper," their bond is evident, complicating Oluwande's growing relationship with the pirate queen.
Stede & The Crew Ditch Zheng Yi Sao For The Revenge
When it becomes evident that Zheng Yi Sao intends to follow her first mate's counsel and eliminate the remaining members of Ed's crew, Stede takes matters into his own hands and formulates a cunning plan for their escape. Not only does he successfully free the rest of the crew, but he also ensures their safe passage onto the Revenge. In order to prevent the pirate queen from pursuing their ship, Stede's crew steals the helm of her vessel. Although their escape is spectacular, Stede has undeniably gained a formidable foe.
Ed Speaks With Captain Hornigold In Purgatory & Has A Revelation
In the previous episode, Ed finds himself stranded on an apparently deserted island. This aligns somewhat with Izzy and the others' explanation during the mutiny accusation, where they admit to leaving a "retired" Ed behind. However, while Ed remains unconscious below deck, his mind and soul embark on a captivating voyage of self-discovery. Surprisingly, this island serves as Ed's personal purgatory, a place where he encounters his mentor, the late Captain Ben Hornigold (Mark Mitchinson).
Ed & Stede Are Reunited
"You believe that you are unlovable," states Hornigold in the purgatory, as Ed grapples with the decision of returning to the realm of the living or embracing his demise. This connects with Ed's troubled past involving his own father, whom he tragically ended the life of, as well as the immense impact that the breakup with Stede had on him. As Ed expresses his animosity towards Hornigold, the former pirate captain astutely highlights that he is merely a reflection of Ed's internal turmoil, urging Ed to confront the harsh realization that his true resentment lies within himself.
As Ed undergoes a personal revelation in purgatory, his body is discovered by Stede who implores him to return. In his vision, Hornigold attaches a rock to Ed and forces him off a precipice. Struggling to resurface under the weight that pulls him down, Ed contemplates surrendering to the burden. Yet, upon hearing Stede's voice, he rallies to emerge back into the light. Regrettably, episode 3 concludes abruptly as Ed opens his eyes. Could Blackbeard and Stede navigate their path in season 2 of Our Flag Means Death? Judging by the overwhelmingly sentimental reunion, it appears that these two pirates might be destined for one another.
