The beginning of the end! After six years at Netflix, Stranger Things is getting ready to wrap up its journey with a fifth and final season.

Creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed in a heartfelt letter in February 2022 that they had initially planned for Stranger Things to span four to five seasons. However, they announced that the upcoming fourth season will serve as the penultimate chapter, with the fifth season marking the end of the beloved series set in Hawkins, Indiana.

The writing team expressed their intention to expand the Stranger Things universe by introducing new projects. They hinted at the existence of thrilling stories yet to be told, with new mysteries, adventures, and unexpected heroes. The message also emphasized the importance of the audience's support as they bring the current narrative to a close, focusing on the powerful girl named Eleven, her courageous friends, the troubled police chief, the determined mother, the quaint town of Hawkins, and the enigmatic alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.

In a subsequent interview, the Duffer Brothers delved into their vision for the final episodes and addressed the decision to split season 4.

As the episodes of the show were being developed, it became apparent that the season was too extensive to be released all at once. With a runtime of almost 13 hours, it felt more like two seasons combined rather than one cohesive unit. This realization led to the decision to split the season after Episode 7, which was considered to be as impactful as any previous season finale. Episode 7 effectively served as the conclusion of the second act, and the creators believed that there was enough material for a compelling final act to make up Volume 2.

As anticipation grew for Volume 2 of Season 4, the creators, Ross and Matt, expressed their hope that the wait for the final season would not be as long. They had always planned for Season 4 to be the second-to-last season, with its ending setting the stage for Season 5. During the six-month hiatus caused by the pandemic, they took the opportunity to outline Season 5 and pitch it to Netflix. While they couldn't guarantee a specific timeline, they believed that the gap between seasons would be considerably shorter this time due to already having an initial outline and not expecting another lengthy interruption.

Everything to Know About the 5th and Final Season of 'Stranger Things'

After six successful years on Netflix, the beloved series Stranger Things is gearing up to conclude its thrilling journey with an epic fifth and final season. In an exciting announcement leading up to the highly-anticipated season 4 premiere, the talented creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed their decision to bring the story to a satisfying close with one last chapter set in the nostalgic town of Hawkins, Indiana.

"In February 2022, the creators of Stranger Things revealed that they had meticulously mapped out the entire story arc for the series seven years ago. Originally envisioning a narrative spanning four to five seasons, they soon realized that the story was too expansive to be contained within this timeframe. However, they assured fans that the thrilling conclusion was now imminent, with Season 4 serving as the second-to-last season, and Season 5 marking the grand finale.

In addition to the impending conclusion, the writing team tantalizingly hinted at the possibility of expanding the Stranger Things universe through various future projects. They expressed their enthusiasm for exploring new mysteries, embarking on fresh adventures, and introducing unexpected heroes within the captivating world they had created. Nevertheless, their immediate focus was on inviting viewers to remain by their side until the conclusion of this extraordinary tale. It is a story that revolves around a formidable young girl named Eleven and her valiant group of friends, a town plagued by darkness called Hawkins, and a mysterious parallel realm known only as the Upside Down."

In May 2022, the Duffer Brothers revealed their initial plan to release all the episodes of season 4 at once. However, as they started working on the episodes, they realized that the season was too extensive to be released as a single batch. With nearly 13 hours of content, it felt more like two seasons combined. After the release of the first seven episodes, the Duffer Brothers explained to Variety that Episode 7 was as monumental as any previous season finale. Therefore, it made sense to split the season at that point. They considered Episode 7 to mark the end of the second act and believed that the remaining episodes had enough compelling content to form Volume 2.

Is There a Story Already Planned for 'Stranger Things' Season 5?

In May 2022, director Shawn Levy discussed the process of being clued into the show's conclusion by the Duffer Brothers.

"The Duffer Brothers have a clear vision for how the show will ultimately conclude, and they have shared hints of it with me throughout our six and a half years together. However, they prefer to keep their ideas private until they are fully developed," Levy revealed exclusively at the premiere of Stranger Things season 4. "Once they have a solid plan, they bring it to me and we take the necessary steps forward. It has become evident that we have one more season that will be both fulfilling and consistently amazing."

Levy also expressed his commitment to ensuring that Stranger Things maintains its quality throughout its run. "We are determined not to overstay our welcome or struggle to find a satisfying ending," he emphasized. "Our goal is to truly deliver a memorable conclusion. I believe we have achieved that with each season thus far, and we intend to do the same for the entire series."

Will 'Stranger Things' Season 5 Answer Every Question?

For Priah Ferguson, who portrays the character of Erica Sinclair, the ultimate season of Stranger Things revolves around tying up loose ends in the storyline. In an interview with Us in May 2022, she expressed her desire for closure throughout the entire series. Ferguson hopes that by the end of season 5, all lingering issues would be resolved and the overall situation would be brought to a satisfactory conclusion. Instead of ending on a highly traumatic note like previous seasons, she envisions a victorious outcome where the monster is defeated and the characters emerge as winners.

What Is the Inspiration Behind Season 5?

"The upcoming episodes of the show will bear resemblance to the energy of 'Return of the Jedi,' not necessarily in terms of tone, but in the sense that they will dive right into the action," shared Matt with The Wrap in May 2022. "We're skipping the gradual build-up this time around. Once viewers reach the conclusion of season 4, they'll understand what I mean. It's like we're hitting the ground running."

Ross acknowledged that the story structure would be different, stating, "In each season, there has been a lot of groundwork and preparation, but season 5 will immediately kick into high gear from the very first scene. At least that's what I recall from the outline."

During an interview in June 2022, Joseph Quinn expressed his anticipation to resume his role in the final season. After season 4 premiered, he confidently stated to Digital Spy, "Oh, yeah, I think so. I can't see why not. I'd be furious if they're not bringing me back."

After the shocking demise of Eddie in the season 4 finale, Quinn hinted at the possibility of a future appearance. Speaking to E! News in July 2022, he expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "It would be enjoyable, wouldn't it? I would definitely be open to it. Let's wait and see."

Furthermore, Quinn shared his thoughts on how he would like Eddie to be remembered following his character's sacrifice for Hawkins. "It would be satisfying to clear his name," Quinn remarked. "I'm uncertain about how that will happen, but it feels unjust, doesn't it? He gave everything for a town that wrongly perceives him as a monster. But he's not. Hopefully, they can rectify that misunderstanding."

How Will Season 5 of 'Stranger Things' Pick Back Up?

Ross mentioned in an interview with TVLine in June 2022 that they plan to incorporate a time jump in the upcoming seasons 4 and 5. However, due to logistical constraints, shooting the seasons back-to-back was not possible. Ross expressed their intention to discuss this matter with the writers once they begin working on the show.

In July 2022, Matt discussed the narrative pace of season 5, stating that it will kick off at full throttle. He mentioned to Collider that there will be no gradual buildup, as there is no time for it. Given the events at the end of season 4, normalcy will be nonexistent, and the pace will be relentless right from the start, racing at a speed of 100 miles per hour.

What Location Will Play a Big Role?

During an interview with Variety in June 2022, the Duffer Brothers provided hints about the upcoming exploration of the hierarchy of the Upside Down in the final season of the show. Ross emphasized that Season 5 would delve into the answers surrounding the Upside Down, making it a central focus of the storyline.

One month later, the writing duo expanded upon their creative vision.

"Yeah. The majority of the story takes place in Hawkins, with significant portions set in the Upside Down," shared Matt during an interview with Collider in July 2022. "What excites us about season 5 is the return of everyone. In season 4, we wanted to explore the idea of characters being scattered. That was what made it unique. However, in this season, it's all about bringing them back together, returning to Hawkins... It's intriguing to delve into the dynamics of season one once again, but on a much larger and more epic scale."

"I believe our goal is to have eight episodes once again. We don't want it to span 13 hours. We're aiming for a duration of around 10 hours or so," Matt mentioned to Collider in July 2022. "I anticipate it being longer than the first season due to the amount we need to wrap up, but I don't think it will be as lengthy as Season 4."

How Long Will It Be?

Ross mentioned that the writers room would commence shortly after the second installment of season 4 premiered. He stated, "I am aware that the writer's room will begin in the first week of August."

David Harbour mentioned that fans will have to wait for a considerable amount of time. He stated, "I believe we will start shooting next year. The writing will be completed this year, and there is a need for preparation and other tasks, so hopefully, it will be released this year. However, based on our track record, it will probably come out in mid-2024."

After appearing to perish in the first season, Dr. Brenner, also known as Papa (portrayed by Matthew Modine), unexpectedly made a comeback in season 4. Although Papa met his demise once again, the unpredictable nature of Stranger Things leaves room for speculation, and Modine expresses his hope that the Duffer Brothers will find a way to bring his character back for a second time. When asked by Vulture if he believes Dr. Brenner is truly deceased, the actor responded, "No, I wouldn't. Because I wouldn't want him to be dead." He further expressed his attachment to the show's creators, stating, "I don't want to accept that it's over because I have a deep admiration for the Duffers. I don't want to accept that it's over because I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to collaborate with [Millie Bobby Brown] once more."

Will There Be New Characters?

The Duffer brothers explained that there likely wouldn’t be many newbies in Hawkins for the final season.

"We are committed to prioritizing the OG characters and minimizing the introduction of new ones for Season 5," Matt shared with IndieWire in August 2022. He further explained, "Our goal is to ensure that any new character we bring in plays a significant role in the overall storyline. With such a talented cast and dedicated actors already onboard, introducing a new character means we have to allocate time away from the existing characters."

What Will Lucas and Max's Relationship Look Like?

"She won't be able to make it to the movie date on Friday. There are still a lot of uncertainties," said the Fear Street star in an interview with W Magazine in August 2022, discussing her character's romantic future. "However, through this entire experience, she has likely gained a deeper understanding of the importance of keeping loved ones close. We catch a glimpse of this in episode 9, when she agrees to go on the movie date."

Sink stated that it seems like she is prepared to open up to others, recover, and move forward from all the challenges she has faced. Regrettably, her progress was disrupted. However, Sink expressed his desire to witness her continue on this journey and reach a point where she is completely true to herself again.

What Can Fans Expect for Will's Final Arc?

"There is certainly going to be a new focal point for Will in season 5, and I find it incredibly thrilling. I am eagerly anticipating what the creators have in store for us," Schnapp shared exclusively with We in January 2023. "They haven't disclosed any specific details to me, but they did say, 'Just wait. You will be filled with happiness and excitement. So be patient.'"

The actor went on to say, "I believe the story began and revolved around Will, so concluding it with him and revisiting that aspect is a satisfying way for them to tie up loose ends."

When Will Season 5 Air?

During a February 2023 interview, Wolfhard made a subtle reference to the anticipated release date of the season. "By the time it is unveiled, I will have reached the age of 22, I believe. It's truly remarkable considering I began my involvement in the show at the tender age of 12," he shared with GQ when he was just 20 years old.
