Unveiling the Epic Failures of Destiny 2: Why It Falls Short on the Fundamentals of a Looter-Shooter

Destiny 2 falls short of industry standards in its implementation of loot chests, undermining the core principle of a looter-shooter game Discover the key issue with loot chests in Destiny 2

Highlights

Destiny 2's loot chests often disappoint players with underwhelming rewards, especially those found in patrol destinations, Lost Sectors, and Public Events.

Several loot chests in Destiny 2, such as those found in the Lighthouse, Raids, and Dungeons, provide valuable rewards. However, accessing them requires overcoming significant challenges. The game faces a general problem regarding the scarcity of rewards offered by numerous loot chests, revealing a broader issue with the quality of rewards in Destiny 2's patrol destinations.

Destiny 2 undeniably has its strengths within the looter-shooter genre, but it does have some flaws. Although the gunplay is consistently impressive, the game's handling of loot can often be disappointing.

A recurring issue in Destiny 2 revolves around the lackluster rewards obtained from opening loot chests. While there are a few chests that consistently provide valuable loot, the majority of chests in the game can be highly underwhelming.

The Problem with Loot Chests in Destiny 2

While there are numerous loot chests in Destiny 2, it is important to note that only a select few offer truly valuable rewards. These exceptional chests can be found at the Lighthouse upon achieving flawless victory in Trials of Osiris, the thrilling conclusion of Dares of Eternity, as well as at the conclusion of challenging encounters within Raids and Dungeons. Unsurprisingly, these coveted chests are accompanied by remarkable treasures, maintaining a stark contrast to the lesser rewards found in the abundance of other chests throughout the game.

Poorly rewarding loot chests can be found in various activities in Destiny 2 such as patrol destinations, Lost Sectors, Public Events, and the lowest difficulty of the Vanguard Strikes playlist. These notorious chests frequently disappoint players by only offering Glimmer and Vanguard reputation. The problem of underwhelming loot extends even to secret chests in Raids. Opening these chests without first obtaining loot from major encounters only results in obtaining armor mods and Glimmer, as they can only reward weapons and armor that have already been discovered. Although this issue is more apparent during a player's first time participating in a Raid, it remains frustrating to not receive Raid rewards from these secret chests.

The lack of rewards from most of the lesser loot chests is a sign of a larger issue. Destiny 2's patrol destinations do not offer the same level of rewards as other available activities, which has been a long-standing problem in the game. For high-level players, engaging with most of the activities found in Destiny 2's patrol destinations is not worthwhile unless there is an ulterior motive, such as bounties or seasonal challenges, that can compensate for the otherwise disappointing rewards.

In the past, Lost Sectors on Legend and Master difficulty were the preferred farming locations for endgame materials and Exotics in Destiny 2. However, there are now more reliable sources for obtaining these rewards. Given the difficulty of the Lost Sectors in Destiny 2 and the fact that the final loot chests often provide minimal rewards, it is more efficient to acquire these types of rewards from sources other than loot chests.

Several problems arise regarding the RNG associated with the loot chest rewards in Destiny 2. While certain loot chests have the potential to bestow high-quality rewards, they often fall short, resulting in players having to repeatedly engage in specific activities. From the community's perspective, there is currently no system in place to aid players who consistently receive unsatisfactory rewards in Destiny 2. Considering the severity of this issue, implementing a pity system could potentially enhance the reputation of loot chests significantly.

Destiny 2 can be played on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
