The Strangers franchise fans are in for a delightful surprise as the upcoming trilogy has already been filmed. Taking inspiration from its predecessors, the slasher film set to release in 2024 stars Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez as a couple on a road trip who find themselves pitted against masked killers. Director Renny Harlin revealed that his vision for the movie was greatly influenced by his admiration for the 2008 hostage film.
"I recall the moment of witnessing it," he recounted to Entertainment Weekly in October 2023. "I had limited knowledge about it at the time, yet I was thoroughly captivated. It truly impressed me, and stands out in my recollection as one of the top horror films I've ever encountered."
Harlin further expressed, "When this chance presented itself to me, the concept of not simply remaking or rebooting, but rather crafting a trilogy rooted in the essence of the original film, struck me as an extraordinary prospect."
Harlin explained that the search for the leads was extensive yet crucial.
"After an extensive search, we finally found our scream queen in Madelaine. When I spoke with her, I immediately recognized her exceptional talent and knew she was perfect for the part. Similarly, we found another incredible young actor, Froy Gutierrez, after much deliberation," he stated. "We wanted a couple who exuded authenticity and ease when together. While their relationship may not mirror the one in the original film, it feels remarkably natural and genuine. This, to me, is what makes this movie and trilogy so captivating. It's the realism we aimed for."

Maya and Ryan, a couple embarking on a journey to begin a fresh chapter together, encounter an unexpected setback when their vehicle malfunctions during their cross-country drive. We would transition seamlessly from shooting the second chapter on a Monday morning to shooting the first chapter on Monday afternoon, and then jump right into the third chapter on Tuesday morning," he revealed during an interview with Entertainment Weekly in October 2022. "This process was extremely demanding for the actors, as they had to maintain continuity with their makeup and wardrobe. It also posed a challenge for my director of photography, as we aimed to develop a visual language that gradually evolved and made the movies appear bigger and more epic as we progressed. Nevertheless, it kept our creative energy flowing constantly."

"When I first took on this task, it seemed overwhelming for anyone to handle. I truly felt out of my depth. However, once I started working on it, I realized that all three films were set in a relatively short period of time. So, if I approached it as one long movie, everything fell into place," the actress said exclusively to We in July 2023. "I was able to piece together this puzzle as if I were creating a single long movie or even a television show. Once I understood the timeframe in which the story unfolds, it became surprisingly easy for me to grasp."

"I'm a huge fan of horror, and The Strangers is probably the first movie that genuinely terrified me. When I received the script in my inbox, I immediately rewatched it to discover what made it so scary. It's not just about jump scares," she explained. "There's something bone-chilling about it, like those classic home invasion films. There's no logic or explanation behind it. So we took that concept and brought it to a whole new level.

"We believed that it was crucial for the movie that the masks remained unchanged," stated Harlin in an interview with EW in October 2023. "Unlike the Batsuit, the masks in The Strangers do not go through any transformations over time. For us, the Strangers are the Strangers, and personally, as a viewer, I wanted to see them exactly as they were in the original film. Is there a place where these masks can be found? No. It involved a detailed examination of their characteristics, how they were crafted, how they fit onto the actors' faces, and how to recreate that same impact. It presented one of the significant challenges during the production of the movie."

“In the beginning of the [original] movie, Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman engage in an intense argument, leaving the reason behind their fight undisclosed,” he stated during an interview conducted in October 2023.
