In the past, movies or TV adaptations of video games were often not well-received by fans and often failed to capture the essence that made the original game so beloved. However, this trend has been changing lately as these adaptations have started to improve. A prime example of this is Netflix's animated series, Castlevania, which is based on the popular video games of the same name. While incorporating the characters and some key plot elements from the games, Castlevania also introduces enough fresh material to create a captivating story.
The series garnered praise from both fans and newcomers alike, and it even managed to attract many people to the video game series who previously had no interest. With such success, it comes as no surprise that Netflix has decided to continue the story with a spin-off series called Castlevania: Nocturne, set to debut in September. This new installment will focus on a different set of characters, including a new Belmont descendant and a girl named Maria Renard. Who exactly is Maria Renard, and what significance does she hold within the story?
What Is Castlevania: Nocturne About?
The story of Castlevania: Nocturne draws inspiration from two original games, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and its sequel, Symphony of the Night. It takes place during the French Revolution in the year 1792, three centuries after the events of the initial Castlevania series. The protagonist, Richter Belmont, a member of the vampire-hunting Belmont family, teams up with a group of magicians and hunters to prevent an impending apocalypse. While Richter is a descendant of Trevor Belmont, his personality differs greatly from his ancestor.
In addition to the traditional main villain, Dracula, this new series introduces a new antagonist named Erzsébet Báthory, who was previously a final boss in one of the Castlevania games. Castlevania: Nocturne brings forth a wide array of new characters, including vampires and magicians. Among these characters is Maria Renard, a prominent figure in the Castlevania series.
Who Is Maria Renard?
Maria Renard, a village girl with the extraordinary ability to control the Four Symbols of Chinese mythology, safeguarding the world in each cardinal direction, is prominently featured in multiple Castlevania games. These include Rondo of Blood, Dracula X Chronicles (a PSP remake of the aforementioned game), Symphony of the Night, and Castlevania: Judgement. While some games suggest a potential ancestral connection to the Belmonts, this detail is often disregarded, leaving some ambiguity. Nonetheless, during the events of Castlevania: Judgement, Maria becomes officially adopted into the Belmont family.
Tragedy strikes in the year 1792 when Maria's parents are killed, and she, along with several other young girls, is abducted and taken to Dracula's castle. Fortunately, Richter Belmont comes to her rescue, saving her from the clutches of Shaft, one of Dracula's servants. Subsequently, Maria becomes Richter's steadfast companion, lending her assistance in the ultimate defeat of Dracula. However, as time passes, Richter mysteriously disappears, prompting Maria to embark on a quest to locate him. Her year-long search ultimately leads her back to the foreboding castle, where she discovers the distressing truth: Richter has fallen under the sway of dark forces and is now enslaved by Shaft. Determined to save him, Maria seeks the aid of Alucard, a half-vampire, to break the spell that binds Richter and together they must confront and conquer Dracula once again.
What Will Maria's Role In Castlevania: Nocturne Be?
There isn't much information available about the plot of Castlevania: Nocturne at the moment, but fans believe that Maria's role will be similar to her portrayal in the original games. While Richter Belmont is the protagonist, Maria is expected to be a prominent character, accompanying him on his journey and assisting in the battle against vampires. The trailer shows her utilizing her magic to fend off enemies, indicating that she will have an active role in the storyline. Her role may resemble Sypha's in the initial Castlevania series, acting as the magical female companion to the Belmont hero. In earlier games, Maria is depicted as a young girl of around 12 years old, but it appears that the series has aged her character.
Additionally, Maria shares a connection with Alucard, a major character in the series as Dracula's son. Alucard aids her in rescuing Richter from evil, and he will be returning for this animated series, presumably in a similar capacity. Symphony of the Night features multiple endings based on player choices, and one of these endings involves Maria declaring her inability to live without Alucard and choosing to stay with him. It will be intriguing to see if the animated series follows this storyline for the two characters or portrays their connection in a less intense manner.
