Although Harmon will not be returning to his role as Gibbs on camera, he will be taking on the role of narrator for the series. Sean expressed his deep connection to the character of Gibbs, stating, "The character of Gibbs has been an important part of my life for 20 years, both in watching my father craft the role and previously having the honor to play young Gibbs myself." He also shared his excitement about stepping into a producing role for the show, saying, "I always felt there was a tale worth telling about his earlier years, so I am thrilled to be stepping into a producing role alongside Gina, David and my dad as we tell this story and reveal a new side of this beloved character."

In addition to a Young Gibbs, viewers will also be introduced to a youthful iteration of Mike Franks (previously portrayed by Muse Watson). According to TVLine's report in January, a young Special Agent Vera Strickland, originally portrayed by Roma Maffia, is set to make an appearance in season 1.
