The Square Enix Cafe in Akihabara, Tokyo's top otaku neighborhood, has been transformed into a haven for Final Fantasy XVI for the past month. With its immense popularity in Japan and beyond, it comes as no surprise that the cafe has attracted a large number of visitors. Luckily, we had the opportunity to indulge in the fantastic themed food, beverages, and merchandise that were available, and we're here to share our experience with you.

Final Fantasy XVI, the latest addition to the renowned Final Fantasy franchise, can be enjoyed independently without any prior gaming experience. Released globally on June 22, 2023, it has received praise from both longtime fans and newcomers alike. FFXVI sets itself apart from its predecessors in numerous ways, featuring more mature themes and a darker atmosphere. Additionally, it incorporates the successful action-based gameplay found in Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

The Square Enix Cafe in Akihabara frequently changes its theme, typically on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, according to the popularity of its featured title. Presently, Final Fantasy XVI takes center stage. This marks the cafe's second installment, and it is anticipated that there will be more in the future. As the cafe continuously develops and introduces new menu items, collectibles, and merchandise, it ensures the return of its devoted fans.

During this iteration of the FFXVI cafe, the main dishes showcased the various countries within the politically-charged and intricate realm of Valisthea, where the game is set. The drinks were crafted with inspiration from the dominant forces and their Eikons, which hold significant roles in both the gameplay and the story. To end on a sweet note, patrons could enjoy a dessert inspired by Clive's loyal companion and best friend, Torgal.

Each dish perfectly captured the essence of its respective country. Take, for instance, the Dhalmekian Republic, which is reminiscent of a sandy desert with a beautifully azure river flowing through its heart. The dish representing this country showcased a delightful combination of brown rice accompanied by vibrant blue rice noodles on the side, and a centerpiece of flavorful spiced chicken. Moving on to Rosaria, we opted for a hearty stew, cleverly presenting the carrots on the side as a nod to Joshua's habit of always leaving them behind. But when it came to portraying Waloed, we went all out, crafting a visually stunning image of Odin using decadent black squid ink pasta.

Afterwards, there was an extensive array of beverages, specifically designed to represent each of the Eikons featured in the game. The initial beverage was included in our reservation fee of ¥1000 ($7USD), which made the cost worthwhile. The most extravagant and priciest drink was inspired by the clash between Phoenix and Ifrit, featuring an orange and purple color scheme resembling the FFXVI logo. However, we opted for the drinks inspired by Shiva, Odin, Garuda, and Bahamut instead. Each beverage had its own distinctive appearance and flavor profile. For example, Bahamut's drink included a light-up ice cube to mimic his signature move, Megaflare, while Shiva's drink showcased icy blue and white tones.

Furthermore, both the beverages and foods were accompanied by a special bonus. Each beverage came with one of sixteen coasters, featuring designs of the main characters and Eikons. The selection of coaster received was random, adding an element of surprise. Additionally, the main dishes were accompanied by mini posters showcasing beautiful artwork from the game. These posters were also randomly distributed upon paying for our order. Despite not purchasing any exclusive merchandise from the attached shop, we were still able to depart with a unique and remarkable souvenir from the Square Enix cafe.

Reserving a table at the Final Fantasy XVI cafe, or any collaboration cafe at Square Enix, is a breeze through the cafe's official website. Unlike most collaboration cafes in Japan, they offer a special English link for reservations made from abroad. In addition, the cafe provides an English menu and guidebook for non-Japanese speakers, ensuring a seamless ordering experience and understanding of the cafe's system. Meanwhile, those within Japan can make reservations through the Square Enix app.

Furthermore, the cafe immerses visitors in the world of Final Fantasy XVI with its captivating decorations. Throughout the venue, TVs showcase thrilling Eikon battles and play the game's theme music. Majestic posters featuring Joshua and Clive alongside their Eikons adorn the walls, while Torgal plushies, available for pre-order, beckon for cuddling. The cafe also boasts beautiful framed artwork. Patrons are encouraged to explore, capture photos (respectfully without disrupting others), and bask in the cafe's atmospheric charm.

The Final Fantasy XVI cafe provided us with a delightful experience, featuring delectable food and beverages that were only slightly priced on the higher side. The adjoining store boasted a wide range of merchandise, encompassing file folders, key chains, stickers, and acrylic characters. Moreover, the reservation fee covered our initial specialty drink, which truly justified the decision to reserve in advance and secure a spot. Undoubtedly, we eagerly anticipate the next rendition of the Final Fantasy XVI cafe!

The Final Fantasy XVI cafe is in Akihabara until August 25, 2023.
