Bloodborne is widely regarded as one of FromSoftware's most critically acclaimed games. Despite the success of Elden Ring, which received numerous awards and achieved impressive sales figures, there were still critics who expressed disappointment over the shift to an open-world format. This change deviated from the well-crafted semi-open spaces and interconnected pathways found in previous FromSoftware titles. However, even after almost a decade since its release, Bloodborne continues to be hailed as the epitome of the Soulsborne formula that FromSoftware pioneered. Alongside its gothic-inspired cosmic horror setting, intense and aggressive combat, and exceptional boss design, one of the game's standout features is undoubtedly its Chalice Dungeons.
Upon defeating the Blood Starved Beast, a notorious skill test within Bloodborne, players unlock access to the Phtumeru Chalice. While this marks the point at which Chalice Dungeons become available, these intricate and complex challenges are already contained within an already demanding game. Serving as a rewarding endgame experience with elements of procedural generation, the Chalice Dungeons showcase FromSoftware's remarkable design prowess and remain unrivaled within the Soulslike genre.
Bloodborne's Chalice Dungeons Represent a Game Within the Game
Unlocking Bloodborne's Chalice Dungeons provides a fresh and exciting way to experience an already outstanding game. These dungeons are divided into different difficulty levels based on their depth, with 1-floor dungeons being less challenging compared to the perilous 5-floor ones. Players have the freedom to delve into the enigmatic ruins beneath Yarnham at any time, as long as they possess the appropriate chalice. Once inside, they will navigate through a series of predetermined rooms and confront various bosses. Even the basic 1-floor dungeons offer tremendous difficulty, but the greater the challenge, the greater the rewards. This includes abundant Blood Echoes, as well as exclusive gear and items unique to the Chalice Dungeons themselves.
Conquering the final boss of a Chalice Dungeon grants a Root Chalice, which can be used to generate procedurally generated dungeons for endless variety and replayability. Furthermore, players have the added benefit of being able to partake in co-op within the Chalice Dungeons or share generated dungeons with others using codes. The Chalice Dungeons introduce a whole new layer of gameplay in Bloodborne that greatly differs from the main story's critical path. These dungeons offer some of the game's most formidable challenges and remain unaffected by NG+ scaling. As a result, players can potentially spend countless hours repeatedly venturing through them with their favorite character builds.
The Chalice Dungeons in Bloodborne offer an additional layer of depth and challenge, showcasing the potential for a Soulslike roguelite with procedural generation. While other games, like Remnant: From The Ashes, have incorporated procedural generation in different ways, the idea of FromSoftware itself creating a Soulsborne title that combines both procedural generation and roguelite elements is an exciting prospect. The Chalice Dungeons already serve as a "game within a game" in Bloodborne, and it's easy to envision an expanded version of this concept becoming its own standalone title.
FromSoftware has always taken its own path in game development for over three decades, so it comes as no surprise that the studio's best ideas from Bloodborne haven't been replicated in their other titles. Each game that follows the Soulsborne formula brings its own unique mechanics and evolution of the original template introduced in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Therefore, it's unlikely that FromSoftware would simply force the Chalice Dungeons from Bloodborne into another game without good reason. However, with fans eagerly awaiting a Bloodborne remaster or sequel, it's safe to say that the return of the Chalice Dungeons is highly anticipated and remains one of the standout features in one of FromSoftware's finest games.
