AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys candidly reveals the untold story behind their iconic hit 'I Want It That Way' in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly Delve into the unexpected history and learn fascinating details about the band's struggle with the label to change the song's lyrics

AJ McLean, the singer of the Backstreet Boys, affectionately describes the band's popular song "I Want It That Way" as "the song that makes no sense." However, he confesses that the group had to battle against their record label to maintain the version we are familiar with today. In an exclusive interview with We, McLean, aged 45, discusses the 1999 hit single in the latest episode of "Anatomy of a Song" and discloses, "Initially, the record label opposed the original version because they believed that the lyrics were incomprehensible. As a result, they instructed us to re-record the chorus."

McLean states that the label's alternative chorus was: "No goodbyes, no more lies. I love it when I hear you say, I want it that way."

Despite recording the label's version, the band had a different perspective for the song. McLean reveals, "It simply didn't feel appropriate." He adds, "We trusted our instincts and vehemently opposed the label's decision."

The Backstreet Boys trusted their instincts and proceeded with the version that fans currently adore, featuring the iconic “Tell me why” lyric. McLean expresses gratitude, remarking, "Thankfully, we made the correct choice."

Ultimately, "I Want It That Way" became the Backstreet Boys' trademark song and continues to be immensely popular after decades. It reached its highest position at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 upon its release and received three Grammy Award nominations in 2000, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

The music video for the song created a lasting impression, and its backstory is equally fascinating. Filmed in April 1999 at Los Angeles International Airport's Tom Bradley Terminal, it holds the distinction of being the second, and final, video set at the terminal before the tragic events of 9/11 in September 2001. Following these events, strict regulations were implemented, prohibiting any further filming at the airport.

Reflecting on the experience, McLean expresses his enthusiasm, describing it as an amazing and memorable time. He also fondly remembers the spoof video created by Blink-182 in response to the song's success, recognizing it as a complement and noting the bond that has formed between them over the years.
