Mortal Kombat 1 is quickly approaching, ushering in a new era for the beloved fighting game franchise. With the previous two iterations following the classic MK timeline, this installment takes a bold leap into an entirely fresh universe. Led by Fire God Liu Kang, this new realm will introduce revamped versions of familiar characters and storylines. This not only means that iconic fighters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero could receive significant updates, but lesser-known characters also have the opportunity for much-needed transformations.
The evolution of the core cast in Mortal Kombat 1 will not only showcase their progress, but it will also shed new light on characters like Stryker. Though currently relegated to a cameo role, Stryker and other minor characters are given a chance to thrive in this rebooted universe. Exploring how events from the previous timelines are incorporated into the reimagined backstories of MK1's cast adds an extra layer of intrigue. Despite Stryker's limited presence in the larger Mortal Kombat multiverse, his past experiences provide a wealth of material to revisit and reinterpret.
Stryker Is Mortal Kombat’s Unsung Hero
Kurtis Stryker stands out from the original Mortal Kombat trilogy's cast due to his unique role. Unlike the other fantastical martial artists, Stryker serves as the leader of the NYPD's Special Riot Control division. Although he has access to plenty of weapons, he pales in comparison to the flashy Johnny Cage. Surprisingly, Stryker became the most controversial fighter of the MK3 era, and some even associate him with the unpopular characters of the 3D MK games, despite his limited appearances. He was only featured in Armageddon and later as part of Mortal Kombat 9's throwback cast from UMK3.
Despite his seemingly ordinary appearance, Stryker's life is far from mundane. When Shao Kahn invades Earthrealm in Mortal Kombat 3, every soul in New York City is taken, except for Stryker's. Interestingly, throughout various interpretations of his character, Stryker often serves as a chosen member of Raiden's exceptional team.
Stryker Accomplishes Great Things, But At Great Cost
Before formally joining Raiden's squad, Stryker, who initially found himself in the midst of the action in MK9 without proper recruitment, worked alongside the heroes and bravely fended off numerous recurring MK villains. Although Stryker's playable debut as one of Liu Kang's warriors may have been delayed until MK1, fans can be assured that he will always stand up for Earthrealm, regardless of the daunting challenges that lie ahead.
Stryker's character is defined by his courage and unexpected level of competence. In the original timeline, Stryker proved his worth during the opening of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon by being the first member of the Forces of Light to bravely charge at the Pyramid of Argus. Despite being taken down by Kano, he managed to eliminate notable adversaries along the way. Similarly, Stryker's chapter in Mortal Kombat 9 displays his skill as he defeats several formidable opponents from Outworld, including the powerful Kintaro, who is one of the game's few unplayable bosses.
Regrettably, Stryker's accomplishments do not precede his demise. Every impressive feat is swiftly followed by his death, often at the hands of a powerful opposing force that has the ability to eliminate numerous heroes. The Battle of Armageddon only spares Raiden and Shao Kahn, while a revived Sindel murders Stryker along with several other MK9 heroes. Although Stryker returns in MKX as a Revenant, he fails to make any notable contributions. This does not bode well for the Mortal Kombat 1 version of Stryker, but if his new self possesses the same determination as the former super cop, he may put up a fight until the end.
Mortal Kombat 1 will be available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S starting from September 19.
