Polish President Andrzej Duda emphasized the global significance of Western support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia, urging its backers to stand firm. During an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Duda highlighted the importance of preventing Russia from illegally altering the borders in Europe.
This guarantee of future peace also applies to the United States. On Tuesday, Russian drones targeted warehouses in Lviv, a western Ukrainian city, causing intense conflict along the long border shared by Poland and Ukraine. President Duda declared that there is no room for compromise, a stance echoed by President Zelensky during their speeches at the United Nations General Debate in New York.
"Russia can only be stopped through its defeat, which will occur when Ukraine successfully displaces the Russian army from the occupied regions with the assistance of the United States, the support of the West, and the restoration of control over its internationally recognized borders. It is only at that point that we can truly declare the defeat of Russian imperialism," Duda informed Tapper.
Since the Russian invasion, Poland has stood as a steadfast ally of Ukraine, providing refuge to over a million Ukrainian refugees and spearheading efforts to encourage NATO allies to increase military aid to Kyiv.
Poland made history in the spring by being the first NATO nation to dispatch fighter jets to Ukraine. This significant move came months before the United States, who only recently granted approval for the transfer of F-16 fighter jets, provided that Ukrainian forces complete their training.
When questioned about the series of corruption scandals that have beset Zelensky's administration during wartime, Duda recognized that corruption has long been a persistent problem in the neighboring country.
However, Duda expressed his belief that Zelensky had initiated a strong anti-corruption campaign upon assuming office. He stressed the importance of not allowing corruption issues to hinder Western backing for Ukraine's military endeavors. The United States has already allocated substantial funds for Ukraine's defense, with the imminent delivery of 31 M1 Abrams tanks scheduled to commence in the following weeks.
However, the United States is also closely overseeing its continuous provision of security assistance to Kyiv. This is due to a rising number of Republicans advocating for heightened scrutiny of how the funds are utilized and expressing doubts regarding the wisdom of allocating billions of dollars towards its defense.
