Spoilers ahead for the Gen V season finale.
Article Overview
The survival of Marie Moreau following Homelander's attack has perplexed viewers of Gen V. Marie's extraordinary abilities make her a formidable adversary for Homelander and a possible crucial factor in his ultimate defeat.
It remains unclear as to how Marie managed to survive Homelander's deadly strike, leaving viewers perplexed and speculating in the season 1 finale of The Gen V. As the main antagonist of The Boys, Homelander possesses almost invincible powers, including immense strength and resilience. Marie, portrayed by Jaz Sinclair, has shown herself to be a formidable Supe in the Gen V universe. However, none of the events leading up to the season 1 finale provide a satisfactory explanation for how the blood-manipulating teenager could withstand the direct impact of Homelander's heat vision.
Of course, that doesn't mean the encounter between Marie Moreau and Homelander comes as a shock to Gen V viewers. With Homelander posing an extraordinary threat, those who seek to halt his reign of terror are exploring inventive ways to thwart the Supe. With Marie's exceptional and challenging-to-defend-against abilities, she appears to be the pivotal figure in Homelander's ultimate downfall. Numerous Gen V theories speculate on Marie's alliance with The Boys in the show's fourth installment, and now, she undoubtedly has a personal motive to battle against The Seven's leader. Nonetheless, setting aside the broader narrative, the survival of Marie following Homelander's typically fatal assault remains puzzling.
Why Homelander Attacked Marie In Gen V's Finale
In season 1 of Gen V, Marie and her peers find themselves divided over how to handle The Woods, an underground Supe experimentation facility at Godolkin University. As tensions rise, Cate (Maddie Phillips) driven by revenge, and Sam (Asa Germann), a survivor of The Woods, come together to rescue their fellow Supes. They urge them to indiscriminately kill humans. Meanwhile, Ashley, the current CEO of Vought, and her team are on campus desperately trying to cover up the numerous public relations disasters of the season. As the campus becomes a scene of violence, Ashley urgently reaches out to Homelander to intervene and "save" the situation. In the midst of the chaos, Ashley also contacts Marie, pleading with her to stop Cate and Sam.
Even though Ashley tempts Marie's estranged sister with a meeting, Marie, who has the power to manipulate blood, is conflicted. Marie doesn't want to harm her peers, but she also can't tolerate their brutality. By using a new aspect of her powers, Marie manages to manipulate an opponent's blood and comes face-to-face with Cate. Just as Cate prepares to use her mind control abilities to bring Jordan (London Thor and Derek Luh) under her influence, Marie, in a panic, reaches out and accidentally blows off Cate's hand. Just then, Homelander appears, reprimands Marie for attacking her "own kind," and takes the side of his fellow Supe supremacists, Cate and Sam.
Marie's Powers Might Have Helped, But It's More Likely Homelander Held Back
In his pursuit of promoting his extremist ideologies, Homelander mercilessly obliterates Marie with a forceful blast of his renowned scorching gaze. As a result, Vought manipulates the truth, placing blame for the Godolkin assaults on Marie, Jordan, Emma (Lizze Broadway), and Andre (Chance Perdomo), while glorifying Cate and Sam as heroic saviors. Upon awakening in an unfamiliar facility, Marie receives reassurance from Andre that she courageously withstood Homelander's attack. Although it is plausible that Marie Moreau's newfound capability showcased in the finale of Gen V stems from her underlying, inherited supernatural abilities, it is improbable that these powers alone allowed her to withstand Homelander's assault.
Although Marie possesses the ability to manipulate others' blood and has the power to heal herself and others, these traits are unlikely to have played a role in her ability to withstand Homelander's blast. It is more plausible that Homelander intentionally held back his power. As depicted in The Boys, Homelander uses his heat vision not only for destructive purposes, but also to warm up milk, suggesting that he can control the intensity of his abilities. The question that arises is why Homelander chose to spare Marie's life, especially considering that she may be one of the few individuals capable of defeating him as a Gen V Supe.
Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I was blown away by the season finale of Gen V. I couldn't believe that Marie managed to survive Homelander's attack! It was so unexpected and I'm still trying to figure out how she did it.
I think there are a few possible explanations for Marie's survival. One possibility is that she has some kind of hidden power that we don't know about yet. Maybe she's able to absorb energy or something like that. Another possibility is that she was wearing some kind of protective gear that shielded her from Homelander's heat vision. Whatever the reason, I'm glad that Marie survived and I can't wait to see what happens next season.
