Justin Bieber has experienced both periods of closeness and times of estrangement with his parents, Pattie Mallette and Jeremy Bieber. Born in March 1994 in Toronto, Canada, Justin was primarily raised by Mallette, who was a struggling teenage mother.

Mallette, a single mother, confessed in an interview with Canadian Christian talk show 100 Huntley Street in 2008 that she often found herself pondering how she would provide for her son Justin. Although Justin has maintained that his father was present during his childhood, he revealed in a 2015 interview with Billboard that his father had briefly left when he was around four years old, only to return on Father's Day. Recalling the moment, Justin's mother had told his father that if he chose to be present, he needed to fully commit.

Following his rapid rise to fame in 2009, Justin's relationship with his parents experienced fluctuations in the public eye. In 2015, the singer openly confessed to Billboard that, amidst years of attention-grabbing actions, he had always been concerned about disappointing his mother and was well aware that he had done so. Explore below to discover the various highs and lows in Justin's interactions with his parents throughout the years, as well as their current standing.

‘90s

Both Mallette and Justin have openly discussed the challenges they faced during his early years. Mallette went a step further and penned a book named Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber's Mom, detailing her experience as a teenage mother.

“I grew up with not a lot of money,” Justin later told The New York Times. “We never owned a house.”

2000s

Justin developed his musical talent and various sports skills, enabling him to earn sufficient funds from street busking in Stratford, Ontario. He used this money to accompany Mallette, his supportive mother, on a trip to Disney World.

"In my younger days, I used to perform on the streets, strumming my guitar and belting out songs, and people would kindly contribute money in my case," Justin shared with Interview magazine in 2015. "It was really enjoyable, and I managed to accumulate enough funds to fulfill my lifelong dream of taking my mom to Disney World, something we couldn't afford before."

2009 to 2018

From the very beginning of Justin's music journey on YouTube as a teenager, Mallette has been by his side, supporting him through every single step -- starting from the moment Scooter Braun discovered him to embarking on tours together during the initial stages of his career.

After rising to fame in 2009 with his discovery on YouTube, Justin's family also experienced growth. In November of that same year, Jeremy welcomed his son Jaxon, followed by his daughter Jazmyn in 2013. Both of these younger children are shared with Justin's ex-wife, Erin Wagner. However, after Jeremy married Chelsey Rebelo in February 2018, her daughter Allie became Justin's stepsister. The couple later welcomed Bay, Justin's third half-sibling, in September 2018. Throughout the years, Justin has consistently shown a strong bond with his siblings, frequently sharing heartwarming photos with them on social media. In fact, he even brought Jaxon as his date to the Grammys in 2016.

2015 to 2016

In 2015, Justin he explained to Billboard the reason for his estrangement from Mallette:

"I kept my distance because I felt ashamed," he clarified. "There was a period where we didn't communicate, so it will take some time to regain that trust. Currently, she resides in Hawaii, which makes it challenging, but the situation is improving. She is an extraordinary woman, and my love for her remains strong."

During an interview with GQ in February 2016, Justin disclosed that during that period, he had a stronger bond with his father than his mother.

August 2016

2017

Jeremy tweeted with a cactus emoji, addressing Justin as "My boy." He accompanied the message with a picture of Toronto's renowned CN Tower, tagging Justin. However, these social media posts were swiftly deleted.

Justin took to Instagram to express his heartfelt appreciation for his father. In a thoughtful message, the "Let Me Love You" singer shared his commitment to strengthening their bond and overcoming challenges together. He emphasized the importance of fighting for relationships, particularly with family, and concluded with a touching declaration of eternal love for his beloved dad.

After their final breakup in June 2018, Justin wasted no time in reuniting with Hailey Bieber, whom he had a turbulent relationship with for several years. They got married in September of the same year and threw a grand celebration in September 2019, attended by both Mallette and Jeremy.

Mallette expressed her joy over Justin and Hailey's marriage on social media, commenting, "What a whirlwind. So proud. Happy ever after, baby."

Jeremy came under fire after sharing a series of tweets during Pride Month that many found deeply offensive.

"Remember to express gratitude towards a heterosexual individual this month for your very being," he tweeted (and later deleted), accompanied by a Pride flag.

Following the negative response, Jeremy issued an apology in a subsequent tweet.

“Acknowledging the nuclear family is offensive?” he asked. “My apologies to those offended. Was not my intent. Not that my opinion matters.”
