Unveiling Jedi: How Survivor Ushered in a New Era for Star Wars Outlaws

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor raises the bar for Star Wars Outlaws with its thrilling portrayal of Boba Fett, potentially overshadowing the latter in a significant manner

Highlights

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was a highly acclaimed game with great combat, level design, story, and characters, making it one of the best Star Wars games ever made.

Star Wars Outlaws strives to provide a unique open-world experience within the Star Wars universe, setting itself apart from Jedi: Survivor but still drawing some parallels between the two.

While the presence of Boba Fett in Jedi: Survivor may cast a shadow over Star Wars Outlaws, incorporating a more significant role for this iconic bounty hunter would truly make it shine.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was widely regarded as a fantastic game, despite some major technical issues during its launch. It boasted exceptional Soulslike combat, impressive level design, a compelling story, complex characters, and breathtaking set pieces. Consequently, it is now revered as one of the greatest Star Wars games of all time. This success has set a high standard for Ubisoft's upcoming Star Wars Outlaws.

From the glimpse of gameplay that Ubisoft released in June, it is clear that Star Wars Outlaws is attempting some impressive feats. Embracing the open-world genre, it aims to provide a vast adventure spanning the entire galaxy. While it shares similarities with Respawn's Jedi series, it promises enough unique elements to distinguish itself. However, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor may have already overshadowed Star Wars Outlaws in one significant aspect.

Set between the events of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Outlaws follows the journey of Kay Vess, a smuggler determined to make a name for herself in a galaxy still under the oppressive rule of the Galactic Empire. However, the Empire's presence is stretched thin in certain regions, allowing the criminal underworld to rise and take control of a few Outer Rim systems. As players navigate this underworld, they will encounter fellow smugglers, thugs, thieves, and bandits, creating opportunities for exciting cameo appearances.

No modern-day Star Wars project would be complete without notable cameos, and Star Wars Outlaws has already confirmed the appearance of the esteemed Jabba the Hutt. But the game doesn't stop there, offering potential appearances from a variety of fan-favorite bounty hunters who have had limited screen time in the franchise. Welcoming iconic figures such as Bossk, IG-88, Dengar, 4-LOM, and Zuckuss would add even more excitement to the experience. Although fans may anticipate a particular bounty hunter's inclusion, it's worth noting that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has already introduced them.

Taking place during a crucial period in the franchise, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor refrains from excessive cameos and instead allows Cal Kestis and the Mantis crew to take center stage. Nevertheless, the few cameos present in Jedi: Survivor are spectacular, particularly Boba Fett's appearance towards the end of a demanding bounty hunting side quest. Although Boba Fett only delivers a few lines, his presence serves as a well-deserved reward for players and stands out as one of the game's most memorable moments.

While encountering Boba Fett in Star Wars Outlaws would no longer have the same impact, given his recent appearance in another video game, his potential cameo could be more notable if he were given a substantial role. Instead of a brief appearance, Boba Fett could have his own questline, adding depth and significance to his presence in Star Wars Outlaws.

Star Wars Outlaws is coming in 2024 to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
