Square Enix recently unveiled the Viper, a new job in the upcoming Final Fantasy 14 expansion pack called Dawntrail. With the Void storyline officially concluded in Patch 6.5, fans have high expectations for Dawntrail and are eager to embark on the next big story arc. The Final Fantasy 14 community has been buzzing with speculation about female Hrothgar and Green Mages, but the recent revelations at Fanfest have shown that Square Enix has even more surprises in store.
According to the announcement trailer, Dawntrail will transport players to Tural, the New World. This is the homeland of the Mamool Ja and the birthplace of blue magic. While many speculate that Krile will take on the rumored Green Mage job, as hinted by her last scene in Endwalker, the role of the Warrior of Light has remained a mystery until now. Some players expected the character to wield a handgun alongside a sword for a Corsair class, but the developers at Square Enix have drawn inspiration from a different source.
The Viper opts for a twinblade as their weapon of choice, adopting a combat style reminiscent of Zidane from Final Fantasy 9. The animations for this new job in Final Fantasy 14 are appropriately flashy, imparting a more martial-oriented ability kit in contrast to the semi-magical Ninja, a fellow Scouting job. Naoki Yoshida, the producer of Final Fantasy 14, describes the class as providing frequent opportunities to execute various abilities in between weapon skills, emphasizing a significant focus on an oGCD rotation.
In addition to the Viper, Dawntrail will introduce two undisclosed classes to Final Fantasy 14. One of these classes will be a Limited job similar to the Blue Mage from Stormblood. Some fans speculate that Beastmaster will be the obvious choice for the new Limited job, featuring a Bestiary comparable to the Spellbook that Blue Mage players can fill up. Regarding group content, it was revealed that Dawntrail's Alliance Raid series will be called Echoes of Vana'diel, taking direct inspiration from Final Fantasy 11.
Fans of Final Fantasy 16 can anticipate a crossover with Final Fantasy 14. In this collaboration, Final Fantasy 14 players will have the opportunity to obtain Torgal from Final Fantasy 16 as a mount and minion through a new collaborative event. Although many details about Dawntrail are still unknown, fans can look forward to learning more about the upcoming expansion at the Fanfest in Japan on January 7th, 2024.
Currently, Final Fantasy 14 is accessible on PC, PS4, and PS5, with an Xbox version currently being developed.
