In Ahsoka episode 7, Baylan chooses to part ways with Shin, explaining that his path diverges from Thrawn's. This decision is unexpected, considering Baylan's previous commitment to his Padawan's development. However, he now decides to abandon Shin in order to pursue the enigmatic folklore that has captured his attention. It remains unclear whether Baylan is driven by curiosity to uncover the truth behind the ancient children's stories he heard at the Temple, or if he has been consumed by the very thing he seeks. Regardless, Baylan has now become a renegade element in Thrawn's scheme against Ezra, Ahsoka, and Sabine.

The Best Theories On What Baylan Is Really Doing In Ahsoka

The origin of Baylan's quest can be traced to Star Wars Legends. Legend has it that Abeloth, referred to as the Bringer of Chaos, was once a formidable dark side entity in the Star Wars universe. So powerful, in fact, that the Mortis Force-wielders from The Clone Wars had no choice but to exile Abeloth to a black hole. What sets Dave Filoni apart from other Star Wars showrunners is his willingness to incorporate Legends material into new content. He has already reintroduced Thrawn in Star Wars Rebels and now there are hints of Abeloth making a comeback in Ahsoka.

If Abeloth is not the focus, there are numerous other theories regarding who or what Baylan is in search of. It is plausible that Filoni is incorporating lore from the Star Wars Jedi games and introducing the Zeffo, ancient beings hinted at in Ahsoka episode 6, into the live-action realm. Additionally, Filoni may resurrect an ancient Nightsister creature mentioned in The Clone Wars season 6, referred to as the Malmourral. Alternatively, Baylan's objective could be to eradicate the Skywalker legacy as retribution for Anakin's destruction of the Temple.

Why Baylan Hides His Real Plan From Grand Admiral Thrawn

He finally seizes the opportunity to distance himself and escape during Ahsoka episode 7. Although he briefly encounters Ahsoka again, she manages to escape with his means of transportation. He walks in the opposite direction of Ahsoka, confident in his pursuit of his own objectives.

Not only is Baylan aware of Thrawn's low opinion of him, but he also has no interest in joining Thrawn's regime. He has already explained to Shin that the power Thrawn seeks is temporary. Unlike others, Baylan understands why Thrawn is eager to return to his original galaxy and suspects that Thrawn and the Great Mothers are fleeing from a different threat on Peridea. While Thrawn shows no interest in tapping into Peridea's power, Baylan believes that he is the one who can harness it.

Why Doesn't Baylan Need Shin For His Ahsoka Plan?

While they were separating, he informed her that her yearning for power is leading her down a different path from his own. She aspires to secure a position within Thrawn's Empire, as it promises immediate triumph. On the other hand, Baylan seeks to break the cycle by awakening the concealed power on Peridea. Nevertheless, he exploits Shin's ambition by assigning her to carry out Thrawn's commands in his stead.
